I posted this in the lounge late last week. I thought it may be a good idea to post here as well.
I have a line on about 50-100 NOS EF86 Dario Miniwatt tubes. I am not selling these myself but I know a spot that is willing to sell them at $25 each so this is something of a public service message not a sales pitch.
I have always said that any folks with EF86 amps should carry a spare and an NOS tube is always preferred (by me anyway) than any new production tube.
If you are interested drop me a note and I will put you in contact with the folks selling these.
This EF86 situation gave me another idea. I am going to be handling EL84 tubes.
A lot of folks seem to be having hit or miss luck in getting EL84 JJ tubes (those were the GT-EL84S) in a #5-6 rating which were the stock tubes the Doc used. I worked with a number of vendors and produced a set of documentation for them to be able to test to achieve this rating but many tubes I tested did not follow my procedure even when I used the same test gear they have as the procedure was not followed. If the procedure is followed all is great.
If you have a need for EL84 tubes I will be produciing sets in limited quantity as I am not a tube vendor but do this for my own GAB clients and can produce extra sets.
These will be JJ EL84 tubes that I will procure from one of my vendors but then I will process them via my own procedure. My procedure will static match the tubes initially as do all good vendors but then I will also vacuum curve trace the tubes which is time consuming but is the only way to assure that the tubes are matched across their entire operatiing range. As I have stated before many times, I can make my Scion XB idle at 750rpm and the Doc's BMW match my idle yet over 0-100 I am sure the cars will NOT perform the same When I was at GT I showed many folks that tubes that were matched at idle were not matched in many other places in their operating range if at all.
I also run the tubes at 150% overvoltage to find early failures and burn off impurities and then burn in the tubes to increase stability.
All this sort of stuff takes time so these are not cheap ... more than many vendors but less than things were from GT ... maybe half way between the two folks.
A matched duet is $35 plus shipping. A matched quad is $70 plus shipping.
As an additional no charge option, if you want a new set of tubes and send me your old EL84 tubes I will test them and send you the result. In this way you can learn if your tubes were really worn out or not and then figure, based on how long they were in use, how often you can expect them to last rather than it being guesswork. If it turns out your output tubes do not need replacement then you have a known good old set and the new set of tubes.
If you wish to have tubes tested without the purchase of new tubes I am happy to do this as well ... preamp or power tubes, at $15 per tube. Preamp tubes will be tested and a report will be generated for you which shows plate current, transconductance, plate resistance and true gain for both sides of the preamp tube if a dual triode ( 12AX7, 12AT7, 12AY7, 12AU7, 5751 ). You pay the shipping as a side note.
If you are interested drop me a PM or email.
This only applies for folks in the Z Forum. If you are from one of the other forums and somebody sent you this post and are not a member of the Z Forum this is not applicable to you as the folks in this forum are personal friends as far as I am concerned.
This is also for Z amps only as I know these amps almost as well as the Doc knows them, know the voltages and other aspects of the amps and pick these tubes based on what I know about the amps. If you have other amps and need tubes I will be happy to direct you to folks that can help.
