Anyone run this amp into an Alnico 1x cab? Just wondering if it will break up earlier at lower volumes with this speaker?

Depending on which speaker you get can do exactly waht your looking for. Might not be a popular speaker choice, but The Weber Alnico Sig series. Cheap speaker that sound killer. I own one and ran the Z-28 `though it at first. It lowered the volume and the headroom was prety much gone.

I use a RedFang in my 1-12 combo, sounds great and no volume loss. there is some compression so if you are into lightning fast playing you may overplay the amp with the alnico speaker but you would have to really be hammering to make that happen. I like the Fang, plenty of power, clarity, loudness, response, I have had alot of good experiences with eminence . There was no volume drop when I changed to the Fang. It did however sound different. However, YMMV of course. I had the Celestion blues, like the Fang better. Plus, you can really drive this speaker, either clean or distorted and it holds up, good bottom end, mids and sparkle and sweet highs, no icepick. I do have a beamblocker on mine but then again I use a blocker on all of my amps to get a more omnidirectional sound. Nothing against the speaker makers out there, espicially Weber, makes great stuff. That said, Eminence has been making speakers for everyone for a very long time. You cant buy that wealth of experience and feedback. IMHO they make great speakers for sensible money. perhaps worth a check out./

I don't own a ton of speakers but I've tried mine through three different cone flavors of the 25 watt Weber 12A150 and it sounded good through all of them. My favorites in a 1x12 with the Z-28 were ceramic for whatever reason. I liked the 25 watt 12F150-B best followed by either the 50 watt ceramic Blue Dog or Silver Bell. I was not looking for earlier breakup however so my experience and preferences are probably not terribly relevant to you.
These days I usually run it through an open back 2x12 pine cab loaded with one 25 watt 12A150-W and the 25 watt 12F150-B. This is by far my favorite speaker combination with the Z-28 at any volume level. As usual YMMV. Good luck on your search and please post your results.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Im trying to hit that Fender deluxe realm with this. Currently I run the twoten cab or a thirty watt WEBcerblue which I find easy to overpower but great even beautiful at moderate levels. Im going to build a Cube with an Alnico and see how the amp reacts with it. Ill let you know.
Cheers, Chris

Cheers, Chris Don't let the size (volume) of the cab be too small or you'll get a honky midrange (not sure if our Australian honky is the same as your's- read a midrange honk). I've made this mistake and while the Ghia copes well with it, the Z28 doesn't- it loves bigger sized cabs Brett

Its Gonna be :
1x10 Open back with Red Fang..90 percent certain now.!! Let you know. I figure I can run my Maz and My 28 into this at times as well as my low watt Princeton.
The cab dimensions are 15x17x11 open..should fill the room..

The 1x10 Redfang openback is just a blast. Breaking in but I am suprised how musical and strong as well as delicate this speaker can be so far. If your a country player this I think is one of the best combinations with the 28 head. Cuts like a knife..ultra responsive. A great addition to the mix.
