I have been wanting to try a z28 for a while now. There are no dealers in the Pittsburgh area so I unfortunately have not been able to plug my GreTsch 5120 into one yet. Has anyone had much luck with this combination or similar guitar amp setup?
The z28 seems to be what I am looking for. To be more specific, an amp that works very well with just a guitar volume change. I want to be able to go from a nice semi-clean tone (think Brian Setzer) to sustaining gain (blues singing tone). I know that if I want to really kick it I will need to use an overdrive or distortion pedal. But for the most part a plug in and play amp.
Thanks in advance!!!!

Yes, Gretsch 6118T-120 Anni w/TV Jones pups into Z-28 1x12 w/greenback. Can't really describe it but it sounds fabulous, big beefy sparkle, and instantly brings a smile.

"Big beefy sparkle" are words that I want to hear! Does the z28 respond well to the GreTsch volume knob? Does it clean up and maintain that sparkle?

I would say pretty much yes, it does clean up and retain sparkel when rolling off the volume knob, with a couple caveats:
I don't use the vol knob on my Gretsch as often as I do with a Tele or strat; I tend to use the mud switch more often for solos.
Since I have a greenback in my Z-28, with the TVJ's its not ever gonna get really clean anyway; with the GH-30 in my Ghia however, it gets more clean sparkle. I'll bet a Z 2x10 might be great too. The TVJ's just kill - I love 'em.
