I've finally played all my electrics through my Z-28 long enough to get a pretty good feel what I think of the amp in relation to each guitar.
Here are the guitars I own:
Top Row (L - R)
1. Gibson ES-137 Classic
2. Gibson '58RI Les Paul
3. Gibson '59RI ES-335
Bottom Row (L - R)
1. Fender Jimmie Vaughan Strat (w/ DiMarzio ARea 58's & 61)
2. Rocketfire custom made relic Strat
3. Fender Muddy Waters Tele
4. Fender Eric Johnson Strat
5. Fender '62 Vintage Hot Rod Strat
First of all, I can get excellent and very usable tones w/ any of my guitars with some knob tweaking. For the Gibsons and the Tele I have to roll the low EQ back considerably to get what my ears are after. I also don't feel as "natural" when I play the humbucker guitars through the Z-28 as I do playing through either my Deluxe Reverb, Twin Reverb, or Fuchs ODS 50.
That said, for me personally this Z-28 is probably the best Strat amp I've ever played through. All the other guitars take a lot more effort to dial in, and even dialed in best they just don't match the magic I hear from the Z-28 and my Strats.
The two guitars that sound the absolute best through the Z-28 are my Eric Johnson Strat and my Rocketfire relic Strat. Close behind those is my '62 VHR, but I get more openness and tone variety from the Johnson and Rocketfire.
The Tele sounded best with Volume at 3:00, Low EQ at 11:00 and high EQ at 2:00.
So ... for me this is primarily at Strat amp. It is an AWESOME Strat amp, though! I'll be using it a lot for my band's more rock and blues/rock oriented gigs.
For my band's jazzy/bluesy type gigs I'll probably keep using my Gibsons and either my '68 Twin Reverb or my Fuchs ODS 50.
Sorry this is so long. Just wanted to give y'all a summary of what I think about the Z-28 paired with my different guitars.
