Hi there,
I'm a proud owner of the maz18 rvrb and Z 28
Now here is my question, what brand of ef86 is reliable these days ? As my tech always told me 4 out of 10 are good, so I'm living in Belgium-Europe, is there a reliable brand like E.H. or G.T. or do I really have to dig for N.O.S.
Thanks Lefty

The Dario mini watt has worked well for me and it wasn't that expensive. Check out KCA tubes. Eurotubes now offers one but I haven't heard anything about it. Good luck. kcanostubes.com/www.eurotubes.com/

And get yourself some tube damper rings as well. They help a bit.

Lefty17958, I'll echo what Lefty and Scully said. NOS EF86s aren't very expensive compared to a lot of tubes. There are some great bargains to be had. I'd also agree that silicone tube dampers are a MUST with the microphonic-prone EF86. They really do help.
Good Luck, Brad

Freddie, Just a word of advice, if you don't mind. Eurotubes only sells JJ tubes. Some of the JJs are fantastic tubes, such as their EL84. But their EF86 isn't that well liked. They're typically low in gain and are VERY prone to microphonics. You might try eBay. If you buy from reputable sellers, some great bargains can be found. I just bought 4 NOS, tested Valvo EF86s, brand new in the box for $15 plus shipping.

At this point in time do not rely on any EF86 tubes that are not NOS. New tubes do not hold up all that well and they vary over a wide range in specs, many times quite far from design spec. As said above, try here .... www.dougstubes.com and I think his shipping to Europe is very reasonable.
