I'm going for my 2nd round of try out with Z's today - I tried out a Carmen Ghia, Rt66, and a StangRay last time...skipped the Maz18 - would you describe it's sound as more "refined" than the rawness of the CG and 66? Seems from peoples descriptions that it's emphasis is on headroom and a more tweakable eq...or am I tottally off bass? I guess I'll find out today...

I tried a Maz 18 recently. I have a Route 66 and a KT-45. I've checked out the CG and the Z 28 as well but not the StangRay. I don't think of the Maz 18 sound as more refined nor do I think of it as having more headroom. I noticed more control over the gain vs volume parameter. (It has a master volume.) This provides a type of breakup not found on the non master volume amps. Some people might be hearing that as less raw. The EQ seemed to be more tweakable but not that much more than the KT and the 66. It's just that it seemed easier to learn how to use the EQ controls on the Maz 18. Learning how to get the most out of the front end of the Z 28, KT and the 66 takes more experimenting. Those have an atypical tone stack and the controls interact differently. There's quite a lot of versatility in those amps that's not immediately apparent. So the Maz may be more tweakable, especially with the Cut control. But mostly I found it's EQ easier to master - a gentler slope on the learning curve in spite of having more controls. That's my quick impression. It's worth your time to check it out. I never met a Z I didn't like.
If you're looking for headroom, the KT-45 has the most.
Good luck,
Eliot

"Refined" describes the MAZ 38. It's a very sophisticated sounding amps that's always "in control". The MAZ 18, as Jayson Chance once said on this forum, is "a snotty little brat". It's got a rawer, coarser distortion.
I think of the Stangray as pretty refined; the overdrive it does have when you crank it is pretty smooth. The Ghia I think of as "swampy". The KT to me, when you crank it (loud!!!) has "crushed glass treble", but it's still got the most clean headroom when you keep the bass and treble controls set moderately and don't crank the volume control.

Preamp distortion (master volume) seems to sound smother to me than power amp distortion. But that comes from working wiht maybe a dozen amps recently. Anyone else find this?
