Well, I took my ES-335 to band practice tonight. After some exploring, I came up with a setting that sounded and felt like "me". Volume = 1:00 Low = 8:00 (i.e. almost all the way off) High = 2:00 This setup gave me quite good clean headroom, felt balanced from the low to high strings, and would crunch up well as I rolled the guitar's volume up. Anyone else here tried this kind of control settings?

I tried some similar settings after reading your post last week. I started around V 1:00 T 11:00 B 9:00
and worked my way up to
V 3:00 T 12:00 - 1:00 B 8:00 - 9:00
I had to roll the volume down on my PRS quite a bit, but it sounded great. I'm taking the Z28 to practice tonight. I'll see how those settings mix with the band.

I started out at practice last night with the amp set: V-3:00, T-1:00, B-10:00, and my SC245 turned down to about 6. It was a bit too loud, so during our practice, I slowly backed the volume all the way down between 9:00/10:00, cranked the T & B up to 1:00/3:00, and dialed the guitar volume up a tad. I need to experiment more with different volume levels to get the sustain and dirt I'm looking for, but the amp sounds great. This is going to be about as close to perfect as I could ever hope to get.

Awesome ... glad to hear you're getting the Z-28 and your SC245 dialed in together. Those SC245's look like great guitars. Very nice guitars in the pics above. I really like the Z28 in the 3 o'clock all knob position. I just roll the volume back a bit to clean up when needed. This amp just sings! Best of luck in the tone search!

Those are the settings I started out trying. 3:00 all works great with my Strats, but with the 335 or Les Paul it just didn't seem to give me nearly enough headroom at band volumes. I liked the low EQ set at almost nothing and the high EQ set fairly high w/ the humbucker guitars. This seemed to take away some of the midrange focus and kept the amp from crunching up too early. Very nice guitars in the pics above. I really like the Z28 in the 3 o'clock all knob position. I just roll the volume back a bit to clean up when needed. This amp just sings! Best of luck in the tone search!

+1 for 3 o'clock on all settings for me. The volume on the guitar works great when I need to clean it up some.

With my LP or 335 and the 3:00 settings, I start getting considerable breakup from the amp when my guitar's volume knob gets to about 4, especially out of the lower ranges. I imagine it's just a personal preference thing, but I prefer setting the amp so I get some more range on the clean before it starts getting crunchy. +1 for 3 o'clock on all settings for me. The volume on the guitar works great when I need to clean it up some.

I hear that! I do change the treble and bass settings a bit when playing my More Paul and my PRS for more clean headroom. The cool thing is that have a versatile amp that is very sensitive to changes in the knobs. Gotta love it! I bet that 335 just sings through the z28.
