Not sure where to start. Picked up my Strat after an overdue set-up tonight and the shop owner handed me a cord and said check it out. So I went straight over and plugged into a slightly used Z28 1x12 and then a CG 1x12. The Evan is way too much amp for me.
I was first struck by the volume on the Z28 which I thought was a loud amp for 22 watts. Lots of sparkle was the best way to describe it. Very cool but not the 6V6 sound I get from my '56 Gibson GA-6 (wide panel tweed) or my SF VibroChamp. And I love Fendery tones. Then, I tried the CG, and whoa, I was floored. It growled at slightly lower volume. I want an amp that will give up the goods earlier and not at 10-12. I am a basement player and not very good but every winter I have at it again. In fact I was too embarrassed to plug in at ZFest at the VFW hall, you guys and lady were so good.
I am going to go back on Saturday. I have a Barber silver Ltd pedal (low distortion) to see if I can get more earlier breakup on the 28. Maybe try out an OCD from the store. Can you give me some thoughts on how you would approach comparing these again? Should I start at mid-volume on the amps and work up. Should I dime it and move up the guitar volume from 2 on up? Is there a good way to dial in without driving the store owner crazy? What would you recommend?
I plan on taking my time. This is a big purchase for me. (I should have done this 40 years ago.) Also a Maz 18 Reverb is due to be delivered soon, and I am afraid that will compound things, too. From reading, the MAZ master volume might be what I need. But, I can tell you, all the web reading does make up for 20 minutes of a test drive. If I wait much longer the Remedy will be here.
Thanks from an east side Clevelander.
