I am interested in getting a firewire audio interface. I am trying to find a unit that can do a lot, but is also small enough to travel with and use on a hotel desk.
I mostly will be recording tracks for personal or songwriting purposes. But occasionally I might like to record more than one track or even a whole band live off a PA submix.
I like the MOTU Ultralite. It has dual firewire, midi in/out, ten analog in and eight out, is bus powered, and can supply phantom power. The onboard effects don't sway me, but the size and expandability do.
I'll be using it with a Macbook.
Any thoughts?

Have you given any thought to what software you want to use and what your budget will be?

DC here!
I have the 828-Mk-II connected to Mac PPC-G5 at home. Motu interfaces are extremely good value for the money.
My 828-Mk-II works perfectly never a problem with it. I can from experience highly recommend MOTU hardware.
Dont forget that their DAW Digital Performer is the best DAW out there (my personal opinion) - but shared with many - if my induction stove had MIDI - I could cook my dinner with DP.

I just got a PreSonus Firebox, mainly to upgrade the (awful) built-in audio in my Mac Mini.
It has 4 analog ins and outs (24 bit, 96 kHz), 2 digital ins and out, midi in and out, and is bus powered, small, and cheap.
It seems pretty nice after 3 hours of use.

I use a MOTU 828 with an iMac and haven't had one complaint.

Well I got the MOTU Ultralte Mk3. Seems to be the right choice for me.
Now how do I turn this darn thing on....

Just a quick word of warning if you're using an external hard drive: Apple laptops don't always like to play nice when you have a firewire harddrive and a firewire audio interface on the same machine. If you start hearing clicks and have audio dropout during playback, its worth checking. Some harddrives are better than others (I believe that M-Audio found that external harddrives with an Oxford chipset work the best) and I think you can daisy chain a drive off of the MOTU. Have fun: that MOTU box is pretty cool
