Man, I would have LOVED to go to that sale. Too bad about GT. I used them for a long time. I just wish they would have kept producing the reissues of the 6CA7GE.

So, did Fender buy GT just to close it down? Or did they just move production to Mexico? I guess my reading comprehension isn't what it used to be...

My guess (no insider knowledge here) is that they just closed that facility. It was likely the liquidation of non branded stock and other stuff that was not critical to the operation and therefore not worth moving. Could be that there are parts of GrooveTube that Fender did not buy. Often facilities are no part of M&A's.
As the article eludes to, Fender will take advantage of current retailers, distribution channel, sales force and product management with just a few critical people moving over with the brand.
It's probably a smart move for fender with the military tube stock being pretty depleted at this point. I for one, am anxious for that iondustry to get back to a sustainable and reliable level of quality and consistent manufacturing.

All I want are a few more GT12AX7Ms..... best new-production 12AX7 I ever heard (altho the new Tung-Sols are a very fine replacement).

You did not miss a thing at the sale ... it was basically all surplus stuff that had been bought at swap meets for the most part of stuff that never worked properly or at all. I did not even attend the sale, I got reports from those who were there. The 6CA7 may or may not be produced in the future. They were never done properly and were always unreliable. Perhaps the manufacturing flaw will be corrected in the future if Fender decides to attempt to resume production.

Fender bought GT and it is now being run out of the Fender plant in Ontario California. The old GT website at www.groovetubes.com was still up last time I looked and there are a few links on the main page that explain the sale and what happened.
