Hi all, new to the forum.
I'm strongly considering a 38 Sr. Played a 2x12 in a local shop and loved the tone. It's heavier than I'd like, especially since getting my gear to rehearsal includes a long, narrow stairway to the drummer's basement. The 1x12 would be significantly lighter, which is a plus.
I'd like to check out a 1x12, but the store didn't have one. I'm interested in your opinions of the 1x12's sound. Do you lose any "magic" by going with a single speaker? And which speaker is used in the 1x12 combo?
Also, the 2x12 was pretty loud. I'm concerned that I'd never be able to let the thing breathe. Would a single 12 help me manage the sound level better so I could run the amp at higher volume and master knob settings?
Thanks!

well, sounds like the 2x12 would be a little cumbersome for you. Have you ever thought of going with a 1x12 and another single 12 extension cab. Bluzsteel (a forum member here and great guitarist) has a setup like this I believe. Better to ask him about it probably. Anyway, I always like the sound of 2x12's over 1 and besides, the Airbrake is killer for getting the amp up to nice "singing" volume.

To my ears and in my experience a 2x12 combo always sounds significantly better than a 1x12 combo. The additional speaker along with the increased cab dimensions just makes for a bigger, fuller sound.
I've owned several Z combos...a Maz Sr. NR 2x12 w/Blues, a Rx 2x12 w/Greenbacks, a Maz Jr. 2x10 and have played through (but didn't own) a Maz Sr. 1x12 w/G12H30 and a Rx 1x12 w/Classic 80. I greatly prefer the sound of a 2x12 combo and although it can be a pain to transport a 2x12 combo, the sonic benefit far outweighs the drawbacks IMO.
Personally, if I didn't want to lug around a heavy 2x12 combo I'd opt for a Maz Sr. head/2x12 cab setup. Much easier to "divide and conquer" when moving plus it gives you the option to pair the head up with different cabs.
Granted, you can always run the 1x12 combo into extension cabs if you like. I've done that before but what ends up happening is... hearing the amp through a bigger cab with more speakers "spoils you", and you wind up always running your amp through the extension cab. Now your 1x12 combo has essentially become the heaviest, most cumbersome "amp head" in existence!
Just my .02!

When I bought my 38, I opted for a 1-12 to "save some weight". Well, if I had it to do over again I would have bought the 2-12 cause that 1-12 combo is pretty heavy and the cabinet size is big for a single speaker configuration. You might search for a "studio" or "studio deluxe"model Maz...Buddy Whittington uses one and I believe it has a smaller cabinet size.

I opted for the Maz 38 head. I actually like the looks of the 2x12 combo better than the head. The head is very boxy looking and almost *too* simple BUT at 22lbs vs. 65lbs, it was an easier decision. I'm connecting an Avatar G212H 2x12 extension cab to the head loaded with a v30 and G12H30. These cabs are highly recommended and are actually pretty light, considering. www.avatarspeakers.com. Check 'em out. The good doc said my Maz 38 would work well with it of course not as much as the ZBest Cabs :-)

I like the 112 with an ext cab, true you do get spoiled with with two but there are many times I just use the combo. saying that , I wish I has another amp for backup , I would for sure get me a 212 , one more thing I like about the combo / ext rig is the hieght, stack is cool and you dont have to bend over to turn yo knobs and thanks for the compliment Charlienc

all the props go to you bluzsteel. the solo on Feelin Lucky is so vocal. simple yet soulful. i strive to play like that. i usually start out with a nice phrase and then get too excited and just lose it and slip into playing licks. no what i mean? great singing too on the whole CD. oh yeah, i have lots of family down in Paris, Tx and i'm originally from Austin although i live in Asheville now, so you're kind of in my extended neighborhood.
keep rockin'

i have a maz 38 2/12 combo. also a z-28 4/10 combo just like the one on the z website. if i could do it all over i would go with the 1/12 comb and the 2/10 combo, respectively.

The feeling Lucky solo I think was done on the slide. I use to listen to David Lindley when he played with Jackson Brown and always loved the way he played so simple but with tons of feeling

I'm just starting to play more slide with the band and of course I'm trying to get this sweet Lindley tone. Do you have maybe an advice what guitar and pedals to use to catch this tone or come close? I have a lapsteel at home but live I use mainly Strats with some pedals into the MAZ Sr. Does it make sense to use a Compressor goosing a fat OD with the in-between position (Neck/ Middle) on my Strat? I 'd appreciate any advice or helpful hints. Thanx in advance...

well for the Lindley thing on my CD I used a 15 watt tweed amp on 10 ,thats how he got his deal. I think you can get close with strat , pedals and such. and it helps to have a dedicated slide guitar ,I foung a old Harmoney that the strings are real high, then put some beefy strings on it and bam

yeah, i kind of like it up here. the music scene is in a bit of ressesion but it'll come back. that's what i'm waiting for, but man, east texas is where my roots are at.
we get some good players through town occasionaly. buddy guy was here about a month back. and KWS comes through pretty regularly. then of course Warren Haynes does the Christmas Jam every year. my guitar teacher grew up with Warren so i like to fantasize about meeting him one day...
plus, Audley and a lot of other guys have ties to this city as well. i just wish there were some more permanent players in the scene around here, so i could hear something that would make me approach the instrument in a different way.
i love it when that happens. you hear a phrase or a note even, or you're like, "wow, i never really thought about it like that before..." does that make sense? oh well, it does to me.
bluzsteel, before i moved up here last year i lived in Rocky Mount for a while (home of T. Monk, Jack Kerowak (sp)), and every once in a while we would get a cool act at the local Arts center. last time i went to visit my dad, we saw Doyle Bramhall and it was a ROCKIN' show.
gotta go,
later fellas, charlie
