So in my RCA receiving tube manual... I can find no mention of the KT66 that is in the Route 66. In Volume 9 of my handy "tube substitution handbook" it lists the KT66 in the back and shows the replacement tube as a 6L6GC. Other than this reference everywhere I see them... this forum and tube store sites... they treat them different. How would a set of RCA blackplates sound in an Route 66?

This question has come up quite a bit and someone else can give you the "tech" answer but the short answer is not very good. You may want to "ask Myles" or another expert.
I think there is a relevant thread somewhere deep in the 66 section.

Tas is right. It has something to do with them being "kinkless tetrode", as 6L6s are not, by design, kinkless tetrodes

Smolder, my friends are correct. Doc even has a warning not to use the Tung Sol "KT66" because it's not a KT66, but rather a 6L6.

Thanks guys. That is enough of a heads up for now. I searched both the tube forum and the R66 and did not find much detail... but the tech explanation can wait.

Thanks guys. That is enough of a heads up for now. I searched both the tube forum and the R66 and did not find much detail... but the tech explanation can wait. The Route 66 is specifically designed and voiced for KT66. For example, one of the design "features" is the ultralinear output section which works very well with KT66 tubes but not so with the 6L6. Will 6L6 work? Yes. Will they sound good? Probably not. Personally I think that one of the reasons Doc's amps sound so good is that they are all tweaked with specific tubes in mind, rather then just a "generic" output section that can take multiple types of tubes.

DC here!
I have seen it stated online several times - but I can NOT vouch for the truth of it - that the lat SRV used the KT66 as replacements for 6L6 in some of his fender amps.
Cheers: Dixiechicken!

Cheers: Dixiechicken! The KT66 is great in Fender BF amps but you need to rebias as a spec KT66 puts out about 85mA at design spec test settings versus a spec 6L6 at 72mA.

Myles, a pair of KT66 would likely work well in the Galaxy as well then, after a rebias of course?

Myles new question about Kt66's and my Swart.
Swart says that I can run a 6v6, 6L6, or El-34 in th power section. Do you think a Kt66 will working there?

DAVE Dave, Most any amp that can run 6L6s can use KT66s and generally the results are impressive ... stronger lows, mid lows and lows. But ... a stock 6L6 at design spec is 72mA plate current and a KT66 is about 85 so you should adjust the bias as with the bias set for 6L6s they will run too hot.
