So......I've only had my Z28 for a short time, but am amazed at how many tones you can dial in with just three knobs! This is kind of an open-ended post, but I hope you guys will still chime in. I really haven't gotten a "bad" sound out of the amp, but I'm curious as to which settings you guys have found that I haven't. Which settings do you find are most Fenderish? Marshallish? Voxish? What are the positions of the V, B & T?? (clock system please) I did see the thread that previously asked your "go-to" positions, but I'm seeking a little more articulation of what you've found if that makes sense. Lastly, I want to see how similar people's answers are on this......which settings give you the absolute most clean headroom? Where does it end?

Sounds really bad, but the setting I have been using with the Z-28 has be off. I haven't played it in a few weeks. It will stay that way for a couple more and then I will go back and revisit it and see where I stand.
The Swart has been blowing me away and in fact it has me stunned. I have put my 3 other guitars away in the closest and boxed up the Z-28. Crazy but when something calls you have to run it down and see what happens and look where the other stuff fits in. Maybe a three amp set up of 2x Swart ST-R and a Z-28 all runing together for my loudest sound. If that doesn't work the Z-28 maybe becomes a Galaxie or EZG-50.
That F'ing Swart screwing it all up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can fine tune off of that.

The Z-28 sounds great no matter where you set it. One cool position that I like is setting the volume at 3, and the bass and treble at 9. It gives a pretty cool sound. Give it a shot!
Dave,
Are you jumping ship?

Say it ain't so, Dave! I'm "borrowing" a Z28 today, and I'm 99% sure I'm going to buy it. I think it's pretty tough to beat a Z28 for small/med sized club gigs.
The Swart amps are good, but I think the Doc's amps are more versatile and way more gig friendly since you can actually see the knobs without laying on the floor behind your amp! :-)

Last couple of weeks I've been setting vol @ 1:00; treb and bass @ 11:00 .... using Z 210 cab ... and an Axis Super Sport .... no effects.

Am I jumping ship?
I don't know. I'm in some talks over a trade for a RxJr. It's a sideways move in value, so it's very fair for both of us. I don't know if it's the smartest move for me, but I have always wanted a RxJr.
Yes, I'm really enjoying the Swart. At 5 watts I can totaly wide open drive it at practice. I'm really enjoying the reverb. If I end up in another trade that results in another Swart ST-R I'll be able to do some reverb things in jams that don't get to do now. The Swart through the Z-2x10 sounds very big. Two of them should be plenty loud.
I think about the things I will loose with the Z-28 not being here, but we have to waite and see if that ends up being the case.... I'm also tring to balance gigable levels and keep in mind my long term plans. Three combos will be alot easier on me down the rode, but that is down the road.
Surely not leaving the Z family. The Swart family is a good family but not the options the Z brings.

Yes, Z-28 totaly has a place in this amp set up I'm looking at and I'm sure it would blend in great with the Swart. I have been talking with KCA about tube swaps for the Z-28. Tells me something about J.S. 6V6GTY's that work great in tweed amps that might pop the top for me.
Also if I end up with the RxJr and it doesn't work out for me tone wise. I hear there is 4x 6v6 amp comming out and maybe it will have killer reverb w/ and on/off switch that I'll move on ASAP.....
I have totaly cleared my head in the last couple of months about guitars. My Les Paul experience has been the last straw. I know what I like and it's the Asat. About to dump the Legacy and the LP I don't know what to do, but I'm sure there is only one guitar I would like to have and it's been in burner for a long time. An Asat with a bar and I'll be covered. Ok maybe a really nice acoustic.
So, that leaves amps, amps and more amps on my brain.

While the amp sounds great and I agree with what she says about the differences between the AST and ST-R. But my ears tell me the St-R smokes the AST is driven tone and there is not much volume differences between the two wide open. The Z-28 crushes the AST in volume and is about equal in tone, but quite different. Yes, the placement of the nobs on the AST and ST6v6Se would not work for me at all. Ches, that was funny!!!!

Dave - I played through Jay's AST at the Michigan Jam and while the tone was great, the position of the knobs kept me from getting too excited. Great sounding amp, though. I also played through Jay's Chicago Blues Box Kingston 30 and Milo's Z28 that just happens to be sitting in my basement right now. I'm going to play the heck out of it today and try to decide if I want it. My only concern with that amp is if I can get a clean enough signal that'll punch to the back of the room in a crowded bar. It's a 2x10 combo. I'm thinking a 2x10 convertible cab under it would do the trick.

Is it blonde and Tan? How does Jay feel about the AST? What other amps does he have laying around?

The Z28 is blonde (2x10). Nice looking. I played it a lot at the Michigan Jam, but after messing with it today, it sounds a little 'honky' compared to my MAZ and '73 Deluxe Reverb when I play something with humbuckers. I did a lot of speaker comparisons today, and ended up swapping out the stock speaker in the MAZ for an Eminence Red, White & Blues. It doesn't break up as fast and sounds better to me (today) than the G12H.
I'm going to take the Z28 to band practice next Friday to see how it sounds in the mix. It sounded good at the Jam, so I'm assuming I hear something completely different playing alone in my basement.

Not only speakers but cabinet sizes as well. The Ghia has coped with all speakers and configurations, also cab sizes. The Z28 can sound brilliant or has this mid honk if the cab is a bit small. Also the bottom end seems a bit fussy as to cab size as well. It's currently happiest with my 212 either with Greenback and Red Fang or Greenback and WGS Veteran 30 (beautiful speaker by the way) Brett
