After having the Z-28 for a bit over a month now,the Mesa Recto 2x12(sealed V-30's) has to go.
Way too much bass.Between the damping of the cones and the V-30's rather harsh persona no warmth is projected.Sounds greatstanding 2 or 3 feet from the cab
Even for rock/metal I wouldn't use a V-30 it brings out the fizz in everything.
Although I could get a Z-Best cab which, like my old 2x12's(I loved) is ported I'm opting for a Avatar Vintage 2x12 with the removable slats.
So what are the speakers going to be?
Well for sure it's getting a greenie. It's the second one I'm aggrivating over.
Should it be the G12H-30 or Hellatone? or any suggestions?
The cab will for most of the time, run semi open back.

Isn't a Hellatone G12H-30 just a broken in G12H-30? I have a Z-Best cab and I thinks its great for rock and metal and everything else but its got a V-30 & G12H-30 in it so maybe its not for you? I also have a 1x12 open back cab with a greenie in it and I always thought the greenie & G12H-30 in an open back cab would be killer!

+1 for greenback and g12h-30 combo.
their sensitivity ratings are 97db and 100db, but they blend very nicely together.

See thats the rub, his cabinet is suppose to be killer and it has the v30 and G12h30 mix.So I know from experience that mixing speakers provides unexpected (usually good) results.Plus if "Dr Z" likes it well...who the hell am I to question it? Right now I want to experiment so I guess what I'll do is have Avatar send me the cab loaded with the V30 and the G12H I'll buy a greenie on the side.Since they design the cab for easy speaker removal for just this type of thing I't the right choice for now.If it turns out I like the "Z" combination I'll buy his cab.

For me it's greenbacks hands down with the Z/28. yep...........like vegemite and chicken ;D Hi George- I thought it was vegemite and cheese sandwiches, jam on steak. or cheese and Christmas cake- haven't tried vegemite and chicken! Hey isn't it weird that my auto spellchecker doesn't recognize that international icon of excellence, Vegemite! Here's a couple of really nice ones, 2 greenbacks, a greenback and a WGS Veteran 30, a greenback and a Red Fang. All beautiful because the Z28 loves greenbacks and for some odd reason the Greenback is a great roostertail mixer! Brett even weirder is that I didn't write 'roostertail'- it was that other word xxxxtail- what's that about?

I was just having a little joke with Curt about the Vegemite and chicken mate
Having a dig at his old favourite (<----English spelling....lol) line of butter and chicken. I usually put gravy on mine, but hey, call me weird.
As for the spell checker, it does my head in sometimes, but lets not go there, after all this is an American based forum......lmao!

I wonder what to Blue would sound like. Something tells me great. The reason I think this is because I ran a weber blue when new with my MMB and it added a cool rasp to the high end.

DAVE Hi Dave- not sure about the Blue. The Red Fang ( in some ways like a grittier Blue) which is great with the Ghia is a bit odd with Z28- strange frequency response when used alone with the 28, but in a 212 with Greenback it's great. As for the Z-28...again, I confess me ignorance, BUT....I have YET to play an amp(FWIW... 40 + years of experimenting...that's a HELLA bunch) that greens didn't sound good thru....JMO..

I use a Fang in my 28, I tried the stock speaker, and a few others I had around, not a greenback though. I really like the Fang however it did take some breakin time. Sounds great when used with my Avatar BB 2-12 cab with a Vin30 and G12H. The 28 sounds so good that I think you could send it thru a tin can and it would be OK... YMMV of course.

I have run this amp through the 210 and a 1x12. I like it through a 1x much better. In fact I was running a closed back 30w Weber Ceramic Blue which was a really silly thing to do. This afternoon I got wild with a 4 inch hole saw and ported the the cabinet. Now the speaker has so much more dimension, I actually think it was pressure stifled before the port. This Ceramic Blue is a very nice speaker in the 30 or 50w. Its really an Vintage H copy I believe. Has some nice highs and mids.

I still maintain that the Z 2210 cab is a perfect match for the Z-28. When I'm using a Z112 cab, it is with the V30 that came stock. Note: these are the older style rectangular Z cabs with the open back. While I am curious to try a Green or a Blue or Gold (heck any color speaker) with the '28 ... I am happy with what I got .... cheers always, eh Joel

I have a Z 4x10 cab and an Avatar vintage 2x12 with a pair of Celestion Golds. The 28 definitely sounds best to me with the 4x10 cab. The golds add a different dimension, but I still prefer the 4x10. I think a g12H with a gold would offer more balance in the mids and bottom. ArnieZ

I think a Z 10's are the way to go. I've had my Z 28 2x10 combo for 5 years. Not manny things last that long in my music collection.

I ran mine at a band practice yesterday with a greenback in a closed back cab. I was floored on how good the amp sounded. Love it! ;D

I still maintain that the Z 2210 cab is a perfect match for the Z-28. The Z 2x10 gets my vote. Bigger tone that most would imagine.
