I just got my Maz 38 back from Dr. Z this week. While he was doing a warranty repair for me, he swapped out the preamp tubes with his new tube choice of Svetlana 12AX7's.
The amp sounds really great! I play 12-string bass with this amp, so the demands on tubes are a bit greater than with a 6-string guitar, but the clarity of the tones and the nice fat bottom end I'm getting now is really great. New tubes always sound good, but I'm enjoying this change. As usual, Dr. Z keeps searching for a better way to get the most out of his amps. ;D

A 12 bass player from Chicago? You wouldn't happen to be Tom Petersson, would you? Have any additional mods been done to your amp to make it sound good for bass? What cab and speakers are you using?

A 12 bass player from Chicago? You wouldn't happen to be Tom Petersson, would you? Have any additional mods been done to your amp to make it sound good for bass? What cab and speakers are you using? I've definitely been inspired by Tom Petersson, but I'm not him. The amp is a standard Maz 38 Sr. NR. I haven't done anything special to it other than what Dr. Z just did with the new tubes. I had checked out several models of Z amps, but the Maz 38 seemed to have the right amount of crunch while still letting all the notes ring out nice and clear. I play this amp together with my normal bass rig to get more bottom, but the Maz 38 actually has a fair amount of bottom end all by itself. The 12-string bass just reaches the overdrive point a bit quicker than a guitar does. I'm currently using an Avatar 212H for a cab, and it's loaded with Eminence V12 guitar speakers. When I put this cab together, I was hoping to find a set of speakers that could stand up to the output of the 12-string bass while still giving some of that speaker breakup that guitar players love. So far, so good! The sound is really full, crunchy and clear without excessive high end from the guitar strings. I'm having a lot of fun with this amp. I'm sure that a Z-best cab would sound great, but I had already invested enough cash in the extra guitar amp for the 12-ver, so I decided to experiment with a less expensive cabinet. I may have to try a Z-best again one of these days...

Seems like you have a very interesting rig. Whooda thunk to use to use a Maz for bass, of any sort. I suppose with 12 strings there is a need for the higher registers of the instrument to be heard.
Very ingenious, even if you aren't in Cheap Trick. ;D
Do you have any soundclips of your rig? I bet it sounds HUGE.

No, I don't have any sound clips, although that does sound like a good idea. You're right , though, it does sound huge. The Bass amp take care of the normal low-end duties, and the Maz plays the part you usually hear from the rhythm guitar player. Pretty cool. I get to make those nice overdriven tones while playing bass lines plus power chords. It's a lot of fun.
