Hi guys...
I have a 2004 Maz Jr. NR 2X12 combo and just have a couple of questions about preamp tubes.
I'm not sure if it's how the amp came stock back then or not, or if it's how the previous owner set it up, but it came with Svetlana's in V1, V2, and PI. The power and rectifier were Sovteks, which I think is still a standard. BUT, I have since changed V1 to a NOS GE 5751, through recommendations from here AND from Mike at KCANOS (great guy to deal with, BTW).
Mike says that these Svetlana's are "decent, cheap tubes." I am wanting to go with something better in V2 and PI. I'd like to leave the GE 5751 in V1 because it added a little more headroom, which I like. I know everyone's ears are different, and there's a bunch of good choices out there, but if money was no object, what would you recommend me for V2 and PI? Mike said I couldn't go wrong with getting two more NOS GE's - in his mind, they're probably the best deal going for NOS preamp tubes, BUT, I see all kinds being used and recommended here. So, what have you settled on in this amp?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, -Tookermel

Well, if you want to get it back more to the original, use a JJ803 for the PI and a JJ83 in the other 12ax7 positions.

Hey, Kruzty.....thanks for the suggestion, man!
Quick question though ('cuz I ain't the smartest...lol). Why the long-plate in PI?
Thanks again, -Tookermel

I don't know the reason behind it, but that's what the Doc puts in them, so there must be some reason. I bet Myles could tell you why - I'm sure he's explained it before, but I don't recall.

OK, cool.....maybe Myles will stop in for a second. I wonder if it has anything to do with microphonics. I think generally those longer-plate tubes are s'pose to be a little brighter, too.....maybe.
Thanks, -Tookermel

I bought both my MAZ Jr NR and Sr NR (new) a while back... mighta been 2004. Anyway, they both came with the short plate Svetlanas. I've tried various other tubes, both NOS and new production in 'em, and always went back to the stock Svets. The Doc knows what he's doin'. ;D
