I was thinking about getting a z28 combo. What does everyone think, 1x12 or 2x10?

I tried my Z28 through my MazJr's 210's and prefer the 12" greenback that came with the Z28, also tried it the other way around and prefer the 210's with my MazJr.
I've been gassing for a weber 1225 (weber greenback version) w/prerola treament to try in my Z28 for a while now....

Thanks man,
What about the 2x10's did not work for you? I was just looking at the Z28 Website and noticed that 1x12 combos are not available anymore...

I decided to buy a 112 cabinet with a Celestion Greenback for a couple of reasons: 1. That's what Doc put stock in his 112 combos. That's good enough for me. 2. I don't play huge shows, so I don't need to move a ton of air. With a single 12 you can turn the volume up a bit more. I played on a 2X10 and loved the sound, but it was a bit more volume and punch than I needed. 3. Flexibility. Combos are super nice, but I wanted to be able to swap speakers and cabs without much effort. Sure you can change speakers in the combo, but I'm talking more specifically about jumping from a 1X12 to a 2X12 or something like that. Pricewise I'm not sure there's a big difference. Depends on the speakers. I decided to pick up a head and cab separately. I'm very pleased with my Avatar Vintage cab so far. I'm not disillusioned. I know Doc's cabs are better, but for $248 you can get a Vintage / Bluesbreaker style cab with a few different speaker options shipped to your door. Hard to beat. **I'm not sure why his website doesn't show a 1X12 combo.... Do some research first, and get out there and try some if at all possible. If all else fails....don't worry about it....you'll get a GREAT amp either way. Best of luck to you!

I recently purchased a Z28 2x10" combo on ebay. It sounds great & is definitely loud with a lot of punch! You do have to turn it up a bit before it will break up since the Z speakers are rated at 70 watts. I usually use the Airbrake for lower volume playing. I think the Greenback would allow you to get there a bit sooner w/o an Airbrake.

I have a 2x10 and 1x12 G12H cab. Both sound great, beacuse the amp rocks, but the 10's have a nice punch and stay cleaner. The 12" has nice punch, but it has this thicker body with hair on it that makes it more bluesy or rock. You can get that into that sound with the 10's but it more from the amp verse speaker.
You'll instantly hear what I'm talking about when you switch cabs

I too have a 210 combo. It does remain tight and focused with the 10's...but, I like that. Great for a country, country rock, bluesy based player like myself. I do have a 112 cab loaded with a greenback when I get the single 12 itch. I like being able to run both the 210's and the greenback cab together. Woh mama. 3 o'clock on all the dials you are in the tone zone.

Thanks man, What about the 2x10's did not work for you? I was just looking at the Z28 Website and noticed that 1x12 combos are not available anymore... I preferred the somewhat looser/darker sound of the OD that broke up a bit sooner on my Z28 with the GB. The Doc's tens were a bit brighter and tighter with a bit more headroom, not a bad sound at all, just different. The 2 10's with their slightly brighter/tighter/more headroom just seems to gel more in the MazJr for me. Maybe it's the el84's vs 6v6's? Anyway, both configs sound great in different ways, but the greenback just adds a magic touch to the Z28 for me, and it was recommended by the dealer when I ordered it. I read somewhere the Doc prefers it in the 112 combo too. I have no clue why they would stop selling 112 combo's, maybe they just don't list it to save space on the webpage, as his 210 and 112 combo's are usually the same price?

I just ordered a Z28 myself.....I went with the head and 2 10 convertible cab because doing some reviews on it from other forum members on here it sounds like it has more clean headroom and is a little bit punchier......I also play in a country band as well so i need a little more clean headroom to begin with.....You probably can't go wrong with either speaker though.......I think this is going to be a great little amp, can't wait to get mine......
