What are some recommendations for the best NOS EF86 for the Stangray? Since I guess its been determined that good new production for the EF86 is non-existent.

After running 3 'Ray's, I prefer the AEL branded Mullard NOS.

I thought Doc used Darios. That's what came in my RxJR. FWIW, I also had a Telefunken NOS EF86, and the Dario was virtually identical in tone (altho not in construction). At least in THAT amp (RxJR). It uses the EF86 a little differently than the Ray does.

Some yes, he landed a cache of them, I got them stock in a Stangray and an RXJr. I really like them. The GEC is really nice as well but I think supply has dried up on them.

Hey Terry,
For the Stingray, my preference is Telefunken, Mullard, and Siemens.
Hope this helps, Brad

Tried a bunch of them, and so far the Amperex Bugle Boy, has been the one that made my ear the happiest

Over at the 65amps shop they use some Dario Miniwatts but many more NOS Teslsa EF86s. They went through them all and Dan Boul preferred the Tesla for tone in the 65amps stuff.
I love the Tesla in the Stangray but on any of these EF86 tubes you cannot compare tone if the tube does not meet design spec as that will color the results. If any of you are in So Cal and have EF86s that you want spec'd and traced contact me and I can arrange an appointment to come into the 65amps shop where I will be happy to do this for you.
In the end it is personal preference.
