I've read on forums where both Myles and Mike (KCA) say that ANY NOS EF86 beats ANY new production EF86. That's why the Doc only uses NOS... the new ones aren't worth the boxes they're packaged in.

I am not happy with any current production EF86. Even if you find one that sounds nice the reliability is far below any NOS tube from the past. If you do use current production EF86 tubes be sure to carry a spare that you have tried in the amp to assure it is usable as a backup.
From another EF86 post but the same applies here ....
Over at the 65amps shop they use some Dario Miniwatts but many more NOS Teslsa EF86s. They went through them all and Dan Boul preferred the Tesla for tone in the 65amps stuff.
I love the Tesla in the Stangray but on any of these EF86 tubes you cannot compare tone if the tube does not meet design spec as that will color the results. If any of you are in So Cal and have EF86s that you want spec'd and traced contact me and I can arrange an appointment to come into the 65amps shop where I will be happy to do this for you.
In the end it is personal preference.
