Hey guys,
This is my first post. I'm currently stalking a Z28 head and wanted to get a few opinions on speaker and cab combo's.
Most of the time this set-up will be played either at home or in small clubs, so I'm not looking for a HUGE sound. Instead, I'd prefer a quality sound coming from a single 12" speaker / cab. I typically play rock / blues through a Strat. I'm also looking at picking up a G&L ASAT Classic Bluesboy (not sure if I want semi-hollow or not). Anyhow...I've digressed. =)
I've read that Dr. Z recommends the Greenback in his 1X12 cab for a Z28, but was wondering if you guys are having any luck with a Greenback in an 112 Avatar cab (either Vintage or Traditional models)? It seems as though the Vintage cab from Avatar best resembles a Dr. Z (in measurements atleast).
Also, if there are any other low efficiency / low wattage speakers such as a weber or jensen that you think might sound good, then please let me know. It seems as though a speaker that's a little less efficient would be better served since this will be used in fairly small places.
I do see the poll that's on the board. I guess I'm asking how a Greenback sounds in an Avatar 112 cab. Anybody have one?
Please think out loud for me guys!
Thanks,
Jordan

I put a Weber 1225 in a custom open backed cabinet I made and it kicks arse. The highs are perfect and I was really surprised how much low end I could get from it. I made the cabinet out of 1/2 birch plywood so it was a good light practice cab to lug around. I use it most of the time because it sounds so good. I have a Tonemaster 2X12 w/V30's for bigger sound but it's really not all that much bigger. The weber 1225 is a clone of the greenback I'm told.
God Luck! BTW this is a fantastic amp! Put it BB preamp or the like for a little extra gain.

So.....I guess this was a bit of a goofy question.........I'm guessing there aren't going to be extremely different tonal differences between 112 cabs (dimensionally speaking). Seems like a good starting point would be a 112 from Avatar with a Greenback.
Side note: I just got back from playing a Z28 210 combo at Guitar Resurrection in Austin, TX. Man, that thing is LOUD!!! I really underestimated how loud 22 watts could be. I'm a little worried that I'll be able to use it in smaller settings (or at home) without an attenuator.

It can be dialed in just like an attenuator at low volumes! ;D Or for clean tones the 28 sounds killer at low clean volume around the house.

Yeah, what Bill said. I personaly do it the other way. OD's and other effects into a FB-2 set at a volume cut with the amp set at 9,9,12. The Ef-86 does a great job with the lower input signal. Alot better than 12ax7 preamps which sound good but missing something that the Ef-86 offers.
The Z 10's will be much different than a single greenback. Take a cable with you tomarrow and plug into different cabs they have laying around. If they won't let you then tell them where you'll send your $1250. Elitemusicsale.com

try whatever you have hanging around...thats what I did... finally settled on a RedFang and really like it in my 1-12. the thing is that the 28 will sound good with most anything and great with some things and downright Killer with a few things....trick is to find the few...

Thanks for the responses guys!
Knowing that I don't have to buy an attenuator is a relief. It's such a bummer when you have to suck some tone out of an incredible amp. You can still get great sounds out of the amp at lower volumes too.....that definitely surprised me a bit. Not to mention how rich those 6V6's are.
Yeah, they didn't have any 112 cabs. I should've asked to play it through a MAZ Jr's 112 combo with a G12H-30 in it. That would've given me a better idea of what I'd be getting (close enough). I'll have to swing back by there soon.
Those are good tips with the overdrive pedals. DAVE - what exactly does the FB-2 do? Is that your overdrive pedal, or is it in addition to one? I know fulltone has a few different flavors, but I'm not familiar with that one.
