I have been toying with the idea of a Ray for quite some time for the beautiful chimey cleans. Alas, there is a used 1x12 Mazerati combo I am looking at. Not the GT, Sr or Jr, but the original. Has anyone had an experience playing these two amps? I'm wondering if maybe with a Celestion Gold, I would be able to bring out a similar chime to the ray with the original Mazerati? Thanks!

First of all, a Mazerati has never come in a "Sr" or "Jr" flavor. The Sr and Jr models are specific to the Maz line, which is an entirely different amp than the Mazerati.
That being said, I owned a Mazerati and now own a Stang Ray (and I've also owned a Maz Sr and two Maz Jrs).
The Stang Ray and the Mazerati do share some similar sonic territory but they are different amps. The Stang Ray has an EF86 front end while the Mazerati has a 12ax7. The Stang Ray also adds a Cut control, whereas the Mazerati has only Vol and Tone.
The Mazerati is a chimy amp, but it has more of an in your face midrange presence than the Stang Ray. To my ears the Stang Ray has something more magical going on with its harmonic content. It's a richer sounding amp, the upper end is nicer, and overall I find it to be easier to dial in my sound with it.
To me, the difference between these two amps is enough to make a difference. If the Stang Ray really speaks to you, you might only be 80% satisfied with the Mazerati.

I bought the above Mazerati from Ignatius, and I'll agree with how he described it. It's definitly got a more "in your face" mid range and not quite the nice top end presence that the Ray has. It is a GREAT sounding amp, but is enough different than a Ray to say it probably wouldn't cure your taste for a Ray....... But tone is subjective, and if you like darker sounding amps, you may like the Rati a bit better? Also...... There were 2 versions of the Mazerati 2004-2006 and the pre 2004 version.... The Pre 2004 version was more voiced like a Ghia, then in 2004 it got a bigger transformer and a slight re-voicing. I've not heard a pre 2004 model, so I can't give any input on that. I do have clips of both of those amps (Rati and Ray) at www.guitartest.moonfruit.com if you want to hear some clips?

I happen to own both the Mazerati and an original Stingray. While I will NEVER sell my Mazerati, the Stingray is an overall warmer amp, deeper lows, more chime, and possibly the best sounding amplifier I've ever heard. If you can only go with one amp, go with a new Stang Ray.
