I´m asking myles as he seems to be a real guru, but any other comments are welcome.
I´m thinking on putting a Mullard NOS 5V4 on my rati to replace the sovtek 5AR4.
I´m sure it´ll get more balanced and responsive to fingers touch.
Will it sound with a little less volume?? I wish it would. I want to pass 10-11 on the volume knob and it sounds just TOO MUCH. Will it be brighter?
Do I need to re-bias??
Thanks

Yes you can do this Yes it should cut volume slightly (depends on the performance of current and replacement Rec tubes) No you do not need to bias Yes it should change the feel
For a clearly perceptable lowering of volume try a 5R4 instead.

If and it is "if" the 5V4 is putting out less voltage, you may find the tone is browner not brighter and it may also have a bit more sag (voltage drop during or just after attack), which Curt hinted at. A 5V4 only puts out marginally less voltage than a 5AR4 (25v drop as against a 17v drop) The proviso is that some Mullard rec tubes are pretty mighty with their output and you may find it is giving out about the same as the Sovtek. I'd agree with Curt about the 5r4- its drop is 67v- down to very smooth, saggy brown tone- don't you love those words!
On my Ghia the 5V4 is a step up in voltage from both the Bendix 6106 and Phillips 5Y3. It is louder brighter and has less sag. Give it a go if that's what you're after. Brett

EL84's and 5V4's work well together . I liked the combination when I had my Maz jr . The volume will be slightly less and a nice smooth breakup which is great for blues . Read the top thread with Doc's comments on different rectifiers , pretty much says it all .

The 5V4 is nice in the Mazerati or any of the EL84 Z amps. Plug and play ... a bit softer than the 5AR4, more touch sensitive, longer output tube life. In the end it will be your ears to decide.
