Doing some recording the past week with my Z28 2x10 combo. Sounds great in the room.
Hit record. Things sound ok...
Run the Z28 into a Marshall 1960... hmm... thing sound way better. Way less anemic, way less strained, way less small.
With the 10's, I was getting a lot of overtones and buildup at certain frequencies... it almost had a cocked-wah sound. Not so with the 1960 (it had stock 75's in it). An ok cab, but way more even and balanced sounding.
Is this is a speaker thing or is it the nature of the combo's size/dimensions? Would a 4x10 with the Z10's cab suffer from the same "small and washed out" problems?

Seems to me you are missing other variables...just just the size of the speakers but the room and the mics used (and technique). I am no engineer, but I know that the approach to recording certain cabs can be different - especially depending on the placement in the room and so forth.

I'm just using an Audix i5 – it's like the venerable SM57, but better (flatter response, and better resolution).
I get the amp sounding great in the room, and basically move the mic around until it sounds it's best in the monitors.

I'd try using two mics - one close and the other a few feet back. My Z 2x10 sounds so full I can't imagine not getting a good recording. I'll have to try my next day off.

I'm using a CAD M179 as a room mic.
The 10's are good for some stuf... but it's not cutting it for big, solid, hard rock tones.
