How does the Z28 compare to the Fender Blackface Deluxe? More/less gain when cranked up? What is the difference in the clean sounds.

There are others that will ive you a better break down on this as they did beofre I bought mine.
I don't think it sounds like BF DR at all. It doesn't have that Fender sound. It can be very clean and it's a great sound, but it's not exactly "that" sound. Once you turn it up you can get way better slightly broken up, borken up, and some sounds of gain that you won't get out of DR. In the sounds I have a video of basicly nothing w/ a Les Paul into my Z-28 cranked @ 3,3,3. It will give you and idea of that sound..
I put a Lovepedal E6 {set light gain W/ a touch of treble from the glass nob} in front of it and you won't believe the Marshall tone. It's floored some real Marshall fans.

Agree, I think the 28 has more of a marshall sound than a DR although you can get into that area. Fenders are funny amps, for the most part they all sound sorta alike but each one can sound different. I believe fender was oppertunistic using whatever parts were available at the time and have read some info that the values of the components could vary by 20% or more. So that BFDR that sounds so good can be directly related to just that amp. I have never played a brown deluxe but thats what they say the 28 sounds like... All I know is it sounds great.... it can do the smoooooth thing but really excells at snarly. and alot inbetween too... hard to pin down. I have a favorite fender that I use having sold off the others...this one has that fender sound in spades....great amp, its a 69 BMR slighty modded with a variable negfb control and a couple of changed values on the normal channel....killer sound, killer amp..its the only one I kept. the relationship of the 28 and Fender is sorta like those cousins that you see once every couple of years....you know you are related but your just not that close. I will boldly go where others have been......once you really start to "play" this amp the other amps you have or sounds you have heard will just fade away...the 28 will take the stage and not miss a beat. simply just a great great amp. I have said it before and will say again it rates as one of about 5 of the best amps I have ever played and I have been playin with amps for 45 years.....the BMR that I have now is one, the others have since long gone.... with the MAZ38 and the Z28 I have alot of the tonal ground covered and there are secrets that I am sure I will discover as I try new things...

...i've had em both at the same time....Fender Blackfaces sound great but you dial in their sweet spot and thats pretty much what they do....they are an OK but not excellent platform for pedals...the Z-28 is more hi-fi....way more versatile....the controls are a lot more effective in shaping tone and the Z-28 is very nice to play pedals through....of course the Deluxe has the great verb...you'd pretty much have to get a Fender stand alone unit or a comparable tube driven unit to get that with a Z-28....with an amp that sounds as good as a Z-28 i don't miss the verb that much....

This is where I have issues with buying another head {EZG at this point}. I have been so blown away by the Z-28's tone and how it jumps right in place when you ask it to. That I don't want the EZG to be a very expensive lack luster amp, because I'm compairing it to the best amp I have ever played.

I have owned a DRRI and Z28 at the same time. The bottom on the Z is much tighter at every volume. The Z has a much more versatile overdriven tone that is more Marshally than Fender. I personally thought the 2 amps were more different than alike. I prefered the Z by a wide margin. ArnieZ

I see you post atthe Hamer board. Which Hamers are you playing through the Z. Have you played your Hamers through other Z's?

Pieman, This will give you an idea of which Hamers I am playing thru the Z! I have had some experience with both Maz amps, a Mazerati and an Rx es but very limited compared to the Z28. ArnieZ

Dave, The Tele is a Hamer T51 with factory installed Fishman Powerbridge and the Strat is a Hamerr Daytona. These are both excellent F style guitars true to the originals with some modern enahncements like Sperzel tuners and 14" fingerboard radius. ArnieZ

Arnie:
How do the Custom Artists sound through the the Z28? I have a 1996 with the Seth Lovers. I also have a Strat and a p90s Hamer Special (1993). Can the Z28 handle this range of guitars and p/ups?

Pieman, The Z28 sounds great with every guitar I own including the single coils, p90's and humbuckers. Each guitar is clearly distinguishable from the other, with the basic character intact. I use the Z for all my Fender like sounds, tweed - blackface and a 65 London for the Vox -Marshall thing. Arnie

I just borrowed a friends Z28, and I'm comparing it to my '73 Deluxe Reverb (with blackface mods). I think the Z28 can get into what I think is "familiar sounding" territory to the DR, but there are definite differences. The lows can really fart out on a DR when you crank the volume. The Z28 seems to have a tighter low end. Also, the Z28 seems a bit fuller sounding, and the tone of the amp when pushed is better to my ears than the DR.
Both are good amps - no doubt, but I think the Z28 is more versatile.

I agree with Blackice. I have a Brown Princeton and I can say the Z28 comes close to it in terms of HUGE tone when driven hard. So, yes, like father and son, because the Z is much more versatile in the clean sounds department. What's more, it really has a surprisingly tight low-end, as the Doc himself says, when you compare it to Fender 6V6 designs. It's also much more dynamic, because of the EF86-based preamp. The only thing the 28 lacks is the SUPERB bias-vary tremolo of the 6G2 and 6G3 brown Fenders...

I'll back what I said earlier even more after playing an amp that has very Fenderish brightness and tone when played clean. I almost wish the Z-28 had more of this, but maybe combining the two could be more magical

I dunno when I'm playing around the 12 fret Jazz clean I would describe the sound the amp makes as "the resonance of a childs soul at disneyland."It has a happy magical chirp unlike anything I have ever heard. Bridge humbuckers would require a low power speaker open back with a less efficient rectifier and soft vaccuum power tubes.
