Well I just bought a 2 X 10" Z-28 on ebay... black with black & tan! She will find a home next to my red 1 x 12" Ghia with black & tan. You gotta hate the wait! I recently had the opportunity to check out a friend's 2 x 10" with my Relic Nocaster & I just had to have one! I think it will make a nice companion to the Ghia... very different sound I guess mostly attributed to the EF86. I really liked the sound of those Z 10's. Does anyone have any feedback on these speakers? Looks like I'll be hangin' out with the Z-28 guys now too!

I really like the Z28 with Z 10's. They are tight and provide a full sound that can get pretty loud. I mess around with running a greenback 8 ohm and the 210's together with a y cable. Very cool tones. Glad you are here. You will love the Z28. She is smooth when needed and nasty when dimed. Paul

6stringer: I have Black & Wheat 2-10, and I really like it. I bought a pair of Z10's from a member here and built a 2-10 extension cab with them. I put it under the 2-10 and run them like a 4-10, on 4 ohms. They sound great together, and I have the option of 2 or 4 speakersa. It doesn't get much louder with all 4, it just pushes more air, a larger sound.
I also use the extension cab under my Peavey Delta Blues 1-15 sometimes. That's a sweet combination.
I've never seen or heard a 4-10 Z-28, but apparently Doc thinks it's the berries.
Enjoy...............................

I've had my 2x10 Z-28 combo about 4 years. The 10 are great at the bottom & top end. You will love this AMP.

Well the amp arrived today & I like it but I think it's got more to give! It's not quite as dynamic as I'd expected... a little flat & maybe a little harsh sounding. I think the tubes are to blame. Groove Tubes in the power section are not my first choice! I've always been an EL84 guy so I'm pretty inexperienced with 6V6's. I am also unfamiliar with the EF86... it's an AEL. The 5751 is a TungSol & the 5AR4 is a Sovtek. I'll probably swap the TongSol for something else & ditch the Sovtek for a JJ. Does anyone have any brand recommendations for tubes in this amp?

When I went from the Ghia to the Z-28 I had to make some adjustments, but I heard a sparkle with the 28 I didn't hear with Ghia and knew I was on track to the sound I wanted.
About the same time I bought a Z 2x10 that wasn't really broken in yet. The more I've used my amp the speakers have become sweeter and sweeter plus the tubes are more burned in. (I have the GTs as well.)
Give it time and you'll be more than pleased.

Thanks for the encouragement stout-hearted! I ordered my self a new EF86... a NOS Dario Miniwatt. I read some things that say they smooth out the Z28 quite a bit over the AEL (Mullard). I hope so... the amp is quite harsh & mid-rangy right now. If that doesn't do the trick the power tubes are next!

running stock jj 6V6, mullard nos rectifier, stock ef86, I have some amperex bugle boy nos ef86's but the stock one sounds good so I will leave it as is untill I need to change it. I have some nos 6V6's as well but again the jj;s sound good...what I did find made the biggest difference is the rectifier upgrade, difference that slapped me in the face different. I also am using a red fang wasn;t crazy about it at first, sounded OK but nothing great...decided to go the distance and give it a real chance to break in...glad I did...sounds killer now... I like nos as much as the next guy but there are some production tubes that I think are pretty good...read some of myles posts for great info and advice. Good luck with the 28 and remember, Z's don;t react like other amps to settings that you may think are normal.... I have some settings that if they were used on any other amp there would be nothing remotely resembling golden tones.....it always makes me laugh when I see how I have set these amps up...and they sound great...... 28's are like women, they don;t like to reveal too much too soon....but once you get past a certain point things really start to get interesting......

I've replaced the AEL EF86 with a Dario Miniwatt & the ditched the Tung Sol 5751 for a GE/Jan version & what a difference. Now it sounds like Z!!! All the dynamics are there & the tone is killer!!! ;D I'm going to toss the GT6V6R's next for a NOS pair from Mike @ KCA... that should be he icing on the cake!!! Maybe the rectifier next?

Good to see you back here Joel.
The Z-28 section was starting to miss you since you have been hanging out in the Galaxie zone a lot lately.

Good to see you back here Joel. The Z-28 section was starting to miss you since you have been hanging out in the Galaxie zone a lot lately. thanks for the warm welcome home. sometimes it can get purty tough tryin' to give even play-time and enthusiasm to both the '28 and Galaxie. 'course, it'll be that much more difficult when I get my next Z amp ;D

amp switcher are only a couple hundred dollars. No need to play one at a time.
Prime example of what I'm going through. Things I want and things I need. I keep buying the things I want and I always keep needing the things I need.

You guys with these tube upgrades make me wonder what I'm missing besides a delay and compressor.
