;D Got home last night and sent my wife over to my buddy's house to get our pug dog and most importantly my RX Jr. I only got to play it for a VERY short time last night since it was so late, but wow.....I'm pretty happy. Chime for days and cleans that will make you cry. Well now today I've had the opportunity to really open her up and see what it's made of. I'm still getting used to the softer lowend due to the 5y3. I swapped out the stock 5y3 for an old big bottle Sylvania that I had and surprisingly it tightened it up just a little bit. Would it be safe to use a 5ar4 to tighten it up even more? Is it customary for the amp components to need to break in for a couple of hours to smooth out the treble? This is what seemed to happen with my amp. Real spiky treble at first then it smoothed out after a couple hours of being on. I'm on the fence on speakers right at this point, started with an 8 ohm G12h30 and now have a 16 ohm Greenback in the the 1x12 cab. I think that I prefer the GB but time will tell....it is the Honeymoon period after all.

Don't pay attention to where the dials point...
If your speaker is new it will soften up a lot with more use.
While it is safe to use the 5AR4, I believe the Doc voiced it with the 5Y3 in mind.
You're in for a long honeymoon!

Specifically about break in, I was wondering if carbon comp's were used? They tend to need a bit more burn in to get to their best. As for speakers, all of mine are very broken in.

Holy cow this amp is incredible! Looking over some of the settings used in Benttops' clips I'm starting to see how different the EQ controls are to other amps. I seem to have found a sweet spot with the whole TMB dimed, volume at about 6 and the master at about 9oclock. Kick in the od and that is some sweet bluesy sustaining tone. I love it!

Yeah, the tone controls are NOT like a Fender's for sure. Glad you're catching on - you have many pleasurable hours ahead of you.

LOL, I can see that I'm going to be burning through el84's every 6 months with this amp......it's hard to stop playing because it sounds so good.

Rule of thumb is about 300 hours between changes. For some of us, that's not very long, for others, that's quite a long time. I wore out the EL84's in my Stingray in about a year, but the amp was only on for gigs for the most part.

I'm on my 3rd set with my 18w since building it a couple of years ago. Needless to say it got(notice past tense) a lot of playtime.
