Try changing V2 to a 12AX7 to get any extra drive you desire. You will lose some headroom (which may be desireable to some), but you'll pick up drive all the way from the bottom to the top of the throw of the volume control. This may be the answer for anyone who needs a bit more gain, but likes to control the Ghia at the guitar controls without any pedals.
A good dirt pedal is still great for other OD flavors though too.

Peach, I'll give that a try....you never know if ya like it until you try it... I really like the Ghia without any pedals..SOMETIMES just an RC Boost but I try not to....

Yeah, that's why I threw it out there... I found it kind of cool. Changes the overall tonality of the overdrive somewhat too, probably because of the higher gain of the 12ax7 in that stage, but I'm not exactly sure of the technical reasons behind it... maybe it creates a bit more gain from that section, while hitting the power section harder too? It's like the polar opposite of putting a 12BH7 in the V2 spot... Whereas that is the 'dirt pedal' enabler setup, the 12AX7 in V2 is the anti-dirt pedal setup. Man, I love this amp... Simple tweaks take it in so many different directions. My latest tweak is running a Blue and a 55hz H30 in a 2x12 w/ the Ghia. WOW! More on that later.

Would the 12ax7 in v2 give a more compressed sound or open biting sound?

Peach, I tried this with a GT12AX7M in V2 and I'm not quite sure about it yet..I gotta take it to band practice and play cranked to decide...I'll let you know...
