Last night my pedal board started wigging out about halfway through the second set. Trying to diagnose on the fly wasn't cutting it, so I just plugged my strat straight in and turned all the amp knobs to 3:00. Usually my board goes Keeley comp/ BB pre/ RC booster/ TU-2...so going dry was a little 'scary'. Not to worry though, just working the guitar volume was all that was needed. I had re-strung the guitar using lube at the saddles and nut so the tuning was stable enough not to require the TU-2, and the guitar volume dimed with the amp at 3:00 was the perfect amount of drive for low/med gain, cutting solos. Convenient too. I'm going into tonights job the same, although on purpose this time. Just going to change out the greenback for an Emi RWB for a touch more volume.

Thanks Bill. I didn't need to read that! I've been jone'ing for a combo and I thought the maz jr was going to be it but there's the Z28 and the ghia... You've been through so many great amps it's to hear the z28 is getting it's love.

Just back from gig II, no pedals and it was a BLAST. As the night wore on and things got really loud I could've used my RC booster, but the amp was mic'd up and still cut throught pretty good. That Strat/28 rig is just super sweet!

A little less breakup and slightly louder. Sounded so good I'll just keep it there for a while longer!

So when you, John (ripple) and I have our mini fest in the basement we'll have a Maz Jr., 38, Z28, Katy 45, Rt.66 and Stingray ( if its still speaking to ya ). We need to try to get some sound clips using no pedals and see what happens I guess this is my latest 'new thing'...guitar/ cord/ amp...its always something, isn't it Harvey? ;D Just ordered a nice PCNS cord, MAYBE it'll be an improvement over my cheap Fender one. Harold (hdahs) sent me a custom speaker cable that made a significant difference. If the tone police ever shows up at my house I'm in big trouble!

I just picked up my Z28 combo today with a single Greenback and just got done going straight in with my Strat. I tried a bunch of different settings on the tone controls, and ended up with the volume dimed and bass/treble at 3:00. Like you said, all you need is the guitar volume to work this amp. I kept putting off getting the Z28 for the last couple of years as Doc has come out with other new amps that caught my eye, but really I don't know why I waited so long. This little amp rocks.

My poor Maz gets no love anymore. Maybe someday when the Z28 breaks down...until then I'm lovin it! Same story with me and the Stingray...I used it for one song the other night and went right back to the 28. I think I've just 'grown' into liking something different, and it just happens to be the 28 right now!

I think we all change our tastes from time to time. Right now I'm in Z-28/greenie heaven. I love all my Dr Z's equally but seem to chop and change on occasions as well. I'm keen to get myself a Weber 12/65 alnico when I can afford it for my Galaxie cab, but for now the Z-28 is doing a fine job and covers lots of ground easily.

"Harold (hdahs) sent me a custom speaker cable that made a significant difference." We'll be needin' to know more about this cable. Well, Harold is a pro player, works in a music shop, and knows his stuff. He built one for me and the difference was quite noticeable...the original was on a Mazerati and was thinner, I don't think it was original Dr Z equipment. I'll put up a pic of it, but Harold will have to tell you what he used. I also just took possession of a PCNS guitar cable that is quite nice as well. I'm finding the cable length, quality, thickness, etc all contribute to different sounds...probably one that only us tone snobs can hear , but there is without a doubt a difference.

same thing for me, my 38 is lonely and I sold the Ray. the fenders sit. whenever I can I go to the 28 and its not a passing thing as I have been playing this amp at least 3-4 times a week for months and it just sounds better and better. It is the best sounding amp I have played in years, perhaps dare I say, ever? It has this insanely stupid way of knowing what you want it to sound like and it does it, you think it, move your hands and the amp delivers what is in your head. I know that sounds impossible but that is what happens, I stop alot when I am playing and say to myself, " this sound is what I hear in my head but better...took a little while to get to this point with the amp but its as good as it gets for me right now...

I'm totally agreeing with you Fishman. I think the double powered version "The Curt" or Z-plex is going to be a killer.
