Chicago 2008 - two StangRay combos on stands 30' apart & miked of course - not Celestion speakers but dunno what they are - I am taping the PBS show so I will have another look some time.
Steve looks ten years younger than he is - and obviously having fun.
Yes - RED TOLEX - ;-)
Music to die for.

Last pics I saw of that setup you could make out the Alnico Golds in the back of those amps.

The magnets looked larger and not like "cups" or tapered - more like big bowls - but I'll look again over the next few days.
PBS followed with Bob Dylan at the Newport festival three years - '63, '64, '65.
Only in 1965 did he pull out a Stratocaster and full electric band.
I was in grade 7 in 1965 and had never heard of Bob Dylan - just the Beatles.
First album was A Hard Day's Night.
My dad gave me a hard time - my mom thought they were cool.
Anyway - Steve Miller and his band were a 9.5+ - unreal bassist - great lead guitarist, drummer, and his regular percussionist/vocals man for 31 years.
The crowd was all singing along and dancing and smiling.

This is from the Apple site: My dad was working the those Newport Folk Festivals and Jazz Festivals too. He said he couldn't understand why the people putting on the festival were so mad that the little guy didn't play his folk guitar.

Excellent!
Yes the Bob Zimmerman stuff was also awesome.
Back to Mr. Miller:
Are those twin twin Alnico Golds?

I now believe that both combos were indeed full of Golds. On a side note, Steve used only Stratocasters, and many different Strats, with the exception of a custom bizarre guitar w/ harp type strings along side instrument, for one song only. This wouldn't raise my eyebrow, except that Steve's first/best guitar mentor was none other than Les Paul himself - Steve's godfather - and regular visitor to the family home. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Miller_(musician)

We definitely put Celestion Golds in Steve's amps.
