I jus purchased my first Dr Z amp, a Stangray head and 2x12 cab. I have been playing for 30 years, 20 of those professionally-session work, touring etc.. Used everything from Boogies to VG-8s and PODs trying to get multiple sounds to cover alot of bases. Woke up one day and decided that I sound like me through most stuff anyway and I just want an amp that wants to play along and make what I'm playing sound as good as possble. The Stangray does it in spades,,, it is the single most inspiring thing I've EVER bought. Playing guitar is new and fun again like it was back in the day-not that it hasnt been good since-it just feels "fresh" again. Thanks for a great, inspiring product Wow, I feel pretty obsequious right now.

Welcome to 'ray land. The 'ray is the most impressive amp - I've never owned anything quite like it.

I'm still in the honeymoon phase with the amp and I already want another head to switch to for my dirty sounds. I picked up a Tonebone Headbone yesterday that allows you to use 2 heads into one cabinet. Whadyou think for dirt and Eric Johnson (as an example) lead tone? Which Z??

Every time I pick up my tele and play through the stangray I'm impressed with the richness of this amp through my Z best. Someday my 2X12 open back with blues will arrive and I'll hear it through that. The more I visit this site the longer the 3 month wait so far, seems.

I'm still in the honeymoon phase, and it's been about 8 or 9 months for me! I just can't play it enough, it's my all time favorite amp.

Well the Mazerati GT shares some mojo with the Stang Ray via its output tranny, yet it is a high gain amp. Prolly why the GT sounds so great when you roll your guitar volume back - simulated Stang Ray.

Steve it's no secret you as well as lots of members here are huge fans of the Ray' but as far as versatility is concerned would you choose the Ray with something like a Zendrive or simply go straight into the GT and use your volume knob to wind back for cleans. Does the Gt still have that nice chimey, voxey clang when at half throttle on the guitar volume?

Does the Gt still have that nice chimey, voxey clang when at half throttle on the guitar volume? You know, that's a great question. I think you can do either and come away totally happy. And I've done both here. For me it's simply a matter of mood. I like to change things up a lot, so I have a lot of stuff to play with. But if all I had was the 'ray and a pedal, I'd be gold. However, if all I had was the GT and a cord, I'd be gold. Not everyone will feel this way I'm sure, but I do.

I''ve never played a GT, but I live in the clean/barely dirty gain range. For me, a Ray at any volume (louder is better) plus a pedal is just magical.
At higher volumes, my Fulldrive sounds so good that you'd never think it was a pedal. It sounds much better than even the output tube distortion of many "great" amps.

It sure helps a pedal out when you start with a tone like that!

Wow! Alot of cool replies!
I gigged last night with the Ray for the firsst time. I brought my Seymour Duncan Boost pedal and, for whatever reason, my Duncan Twin Tube. The boost sounded great. The Twin Tube-sounds better with my Boogie Maverick. The only thing I can say coming a way from the gig is that the loose "tube-e-ness of the Twin tube works better with a stiffer amp sound. Tonight I will try a Keeley BD-2 and my old Ibanez Tube King (knock off of BK Butlers).

A lot of us 'ray owners have the Xotic BB Preamp and it works real nice with the 'ray. I have a Zen Drive too, and that thing kills with the Stingray.

Welcome Guitarguy and fellow ray enthusiast. I'm with Steve, the BB works great for me. I like the treble and bass controls to adjust for different guitars without touching the ray's massive array of tone control knobs. ;D
On the other question, I have a 6545 amp. The 65 side is similar to the SRZ-65 amp, it gets classic rock (think marshall) tones and has a master volume. Plus the 45 side is very cool for moderate crunch tones. Other's opinion of the 45 side may vary but I think it crunches nicely.

Welcome.
Focus on my pocket-watch swinging slowly back-and-forth.
You're feeling very warm and happy now. Your worries evaporate magically now.
Hit the power toggle switch - wait a minute - now the standby switch.
Now play that 'Ray all night long.

I'm relatively new to this Forum, but not new to Dr. Z amps. I've had a Route 66 for years and got a "Stingray" a few months ago off The Gear Page. I just have to agree that the Zendrive into the Stingray really is a thing of beauty! Then I had to listen to benttop's clips of him playing slide through his Mazerati GT. Rivals my old Demeter TGP-3 in touch dynamics and clean to scream. The bottom line is that the good Doctor is making some really wonderful amplifiers and we're a lucky bunch. Happy Trails, Rick
