Is it possible to use a non linear potentiometer for the volume knob on a guitar without affecting it's tone? I find the gain comes on too soon on my guitar's (with the Ghia dimed) volume control, within the first quarter of rotation itself just like on the Ghia's volume control, after that it's basically more or less drive to saturation. I'd like to meet that quarter point at 50% rotation. Could I use something like mentioned here, www.maxim-ic.com/appnotes.cfm/appnote_number/838/I have no idea where to start, if anybody's done this, I'd love to know the recipe. I think I'll just get a volume pedal, it's probably more useful in any case.

Hi Paul, thanks for that. I now know what I need to. Log/Audio Pots are what I need, I have a feeling George at ACME may be using the Log pots on his prewired kits. BTW all that gear (including your airbrake) arrives tomorrow, but I'm going to have to stare at if for three full days till I get back home. Anyways almost there ;D

If you've ever looked at the volume kit that Fralin puts in, he has a capacitor and a resistor there. The capacitor deals with the treble falloff as you turn down, but the resistor changes the resistance curve on the pot so that when you turn down to 5 it seems like half volume. I had never seen the algebra related to this so that second link is welcome here, since it explains it in great detail. Nice one!
