I`m thinking maybe new tubes needed, it`s still loud but it doesn`t seem to sound as good with my strat, cain`t seem to get the notes to hold as well ( doesn`t seem to bloom like it use too )and i`d say it sounds kind of sterile you know that bell like strat sound, my tele sounds pretty good thru it, new classic p-90 sg doesn`t sound great, just ok , I don`t play in a band but it has been on for a lot of hours at a few jams... so what do ya think, new power tubes might do the trick, guess I`ll have to have the bias reset ? just doesn`t seem to have the hair like it use to ! help me out guys!!

Y'know, if we go back through all of the threads about amps screwing up, my own included, it sure seems 99% of the troubles are tube-related. I wouldn't hesitate to pop in another pair of power tubes. I like the stock Groove Tubes, and as long as you go back with those (with a #5 or #6 rating) biasing shouldn't be an issue, according to the Z website. I put a new pair in mine over a year ago...never had an issue and it sounds great. The EF86's on the other hand...vibration is an EF86 tube killer. If it's been played hard (is it a combo or a head?) in a combo format for a while you might want to look at that, too.

Howdy Pat, when ya coming up to ohio to jam again /;o] I put a nos EF86 not to long ago, I know it was on all day at an outside jam and was a little warm that day last summer maybe that had something to do with it, it only gets turned on maybe once a month here at home and not cranked up maybe on 3 or 4 for a small time, it`s a head so it`s not vibrated much. I`ll try and run down a set of tubes when I get a chance and see what that does, I know the other EF86 tube is around here so I`ll try that too...... also seems to br a little crackle when you turn the knobs with single coils, didn`t notice it with humbuckers (bad tube crackle ? )

I'd swap around some preamp tubes that you already have for starters, especially if you kept the old EF86 if you're hearing a crackle. Power tubes are pretty bulletproof, but you never know.

If I can swing it, I'll sure try. That gas money would probably work better in the boat, though! Not has the cracklin' noise, but if my recent experience with my Hayseed 30 taught me anything, a microphonic EF86 is going to do all kinds of crazy sh*t. I put a brand new one in there and it still made noise...found out the new one was iffy right out of the box. I love tube amps, but man they make me crazy sometimes.

Hot damn ! got it on the first try, pulled the 12ax7 tube, put in one of my savers I had and the strats ringing like a bell the firebird`s grunting and the SG is snarling, didn`t have to spend a dime...... would of posted this an hour ago but I had to try out the guitars again thru it LOL!
Be good to see ya again Pat if you can make it to the lake jam ( maybe bring your Z-28) I`m planning on riding the harley down close to you on a warm weekend, got a friend who moved down to Russel springs about 3 years ago and I haven`t been down to check out his new place yet told him I`d make it this year, lucky guy got to retire and move back down home and he`s in his early fifties.... how come these things never happen to me /;o]

Glad you got 'er fixed up! Better replace that spare...they're good to have in an amp crisis, huh? You'll have to holler at me if you get down here...my lake place is just outside Russell Springs too, towards the Alligator docks. Always got a cold beer close at hand.
