An email about Dr Z retube kits from Bob P at Eurotubes...
Hi Tim:
Yes, I’m very familiar with the Z amps, I have sent Mike tubes a number of
times. The Z amps are on my short list as far as putting up online kits but
as the site says, “just because you don’t see kits for you amp does not
mean we don’t have them”.
I do lots of Maz 18 & 38’s, along with Prescription’s, Stang’s, Route 66’s
and the Ghia’s which use one 12AX7, one 5751 for the phase inverter in V2,
one 5Y3 and a matched pair of EL84's. So we typically use a good NOS RCA
5Y3 to replace the chinese or sovtek 5Y3 because it has a much nicer
dynamic response along with a matched pair of the JJ EL84’s for power.
One of the reasons that the Ghia will be put up as a kit later is because I
have a very limited number of RCA 5Y3’s.
We use a JJ ECC83S for the V1 tube for the combo version or in the head you
can also use the long plate JJ ECC803S which is thicker in the mids and a
little brighter. We don’t recommend the 803 in the combo version because
the extremely long plate structure is more susceptible to mechanical noise
from speaker vibration. If you choose to use an ECC803S in V1 they are
14.00 so it would add 4.50 to the cost below.
The 5751 is a 70mu tube meaning an amplification factor of 70 and the
current production sovtek 5751’s are very poor sounding tubes so we do not
recommend or carry them. If you want to maintain the same gain that the
5751 provides then we will use either a good NOS 5751 or an ECC81 that is
right at 15% higher in gain and balanced which is equal to the output of a
5751. The choices in NOS 5751’s are dwindling and good RCA’s, Sylvania’s
and G.E. 5751’s are hitting the 30.00 to 50.00 dollar range and the JAN
Philips tubes are not musical sounding so we most often opt to go with the
higher gain balanced and matched ECC81’s for 14.00 These will not add any
more distortion because of the higher gain.
We grade our tubes... closely, and
have about 25 different grades of JJ EL84's and for a good warm all around
tone we use a grade #26 to #34 with the #34's breaking up just a bit
earlier.
If you want to order an NOS 5Y3 online then simply choose the "Special
Order" option from the menu and add one to your cart which will show up as
.01 or one penny and then you can use the secure online system to transfer
your address and credit card info and I will confirm your order by email.
You can leave me a note in the comments box on the check out page that the
order is for an NOS 5Y3 and I'll remove the penny from the cost.
A full retube [for Ghia] with matched pair of the JJ EL84's, one NOS 5Y3, one higher
gain balanced and matched ECC81 and one ECC83S would run 72.50
Thanks
Bob
