Hi all,
New to the board and to the Maz Jr. (head/reverb). I just picked this one up (new) and when ever I fire it up it makes a hum/buzz that comes in waves, pops in and then out. After a few minutes it decreases then goes away. While the noise is present the sound of the guitar is affected (i.e. sounds bad). I have 2 different Avatar cabs that I have tried this through-8 ohm Celestion Blue and 8 ohm Celestion G12H. Tried different speaker cables and combinations (single cab, both cabs, etc) with the same results. While the noise is present it continues if I unplug the guitar and cable from the input. I've tried to bury the reverb to see if it's coming from there, but it continues.
The noise sounds almost like a ground type noise, somewhat like it sounds when handling the end of a plugged in guitar cable. After the noise goes away I have played trouble free for over an hour at various volumes. The tone is all Maz Jr., just like what I was after when I bought it. Clearly I plan on taking it back to the store to have it checked, but just thought I'd look for opinions here before I do so.
Appreciate any replies...
Larry O

Well, since I had a new of JJ EL-84s I gave those a try after the amp cooled down. No noise, beeeeyooteeful sound.
Tomorrow I'll try the GT's again. Maybe just a pin/socket reseat??

I was going to ask if the sound continues with both volume controls at minimum. Then I was going to ask if the sound continues with the preamp volume down but the master volume up. Sounds like maybe you hit on it, but if it comes back, try these two settings and get back here with a question. And no doubt the dealer will be more than willing to help if it turns out you need a tube replacement.

It can be a preamp tube too if you find this in the future ... very common.
If the stock GT EL84S tubes are put back in and there is a problem call Rick over here at GT at 1-800-459-5687 and they will be replaced under warranty. They should not hum or crackle or do anything but work great and if they don't there may have been shipping damage or just a generic defect that comes up now and then after a few hours of use. Don't even bother the dealer with this unless you want to for some reason as GT will cover the warranty.

Terrific, thanks for the replies. I just fired it up(with the JJ's) after a day of idle time with nothing but great tone. Won't have the chance tonight, but asap I'll put the GT's back in and give it a try. If the problem returns I'll call Rick. If it doesn't act up with the original tubes I'll figure it was just in need of a reseat.
Thanks again,
