I was reading about different brands of the same rectifier sounding different and tested two NOS JAN 5Y3's- a Phillips and a Sylvania. The Phillips appeared to give a sound which is flatter and more even and the Sylvania seemed to be a bit peakier and have more bottom end. Assuming that my attempts at a fair test (randomly 'blindly' choosing a tube) was ok and my ears weren't leading me, is this just a matter of different voltages supplied, voltage sag or what? An interesting but strange thing! Just another alley to be led into in the times when you don't have enough things to do! Brett

Go to my website and read the section on rectifiers .... www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/rectifiers.htmlBut ... if you want to cut to the chase here .... new rectifiers barely meet spec on a good day and NOS ones exceed spec just about every day, have proper voltage drops and supply proper current where new ones are anemic on current and have excessive voltage drops or in the case of Sovtek 5Y3's are OVER voltage and are more of a 5AR4 than a 5Y3 which is not good at all in many amps.
