Back when I as a kid, 1978ish-1985ish, I lived in a small town in Massachusetts. There was a lot of Marshall JMP 50Watt heads with the 6550 tubes in them. They were really simple with a pre amp and a master volume but man did they sound great. Every band I ever heard that had a guitar player that played one of those sounded great. My question is would Doc consider building this type of amp? I would buy one in a heartbeat if if had that same feel, because they felt great playing them with all that attack of the 6550's and they distortion was just enough that you needed a tube screamer to put it over the top. I would love to see this amp from you guys. BTW lovin my RX JR Check out my latest cut with it at www.myspace.com/peterkonstantakos, later

My JMP50 had the big bottled 6550's in it. They were Marshall's answer to the delicate EL34's that dealers kept complaining about from a reliability standpoint. Of course it didn't help that Marshall kept jacking the voltage on these amps because everything in that era was about how loud you could get. About 20 years ago I converted my JMP to take EL34's and they definitely have a different character. I played out with the 6550's for many years and they were awesome.. real firm and juicy, and very loud. I have still have them.. maybe I should swap back? No.. my ears are ringing enough already!

I have a JMP 100 1/2 stack with 6550's. I've had it since new in '75(head) '73(cab). I gigged it, and a Twin relentlessly thru the 70's, 80', 90's, and early 2000's. Man, that thing ROCKS!! Since the Z's got here, well....My recorder has been sitting on top of it.

I have a 1974X handwired 18 watt marshall and want to know how the Stang Ray would compare to it or what would be some of the notable differences.

Yes the Marshalls with the 6550's were for the American market, all Canadian models came with EL34's. I had 2 Canadian Import 1976 JMP's with the master volume and lay down mains transformers. Just try and find one, and if you do don't be an Idiot like me and sell it. Paul
