Hi Everyone,
I'm new to Z talk. I am considering purchasing a Stang Ray head in the near future. However, I am wondering on the cabinet options available. I really like the vertical Z Best cabs because of their height, yet portability, but I don't know how a Stang Ray would pair with one. I know that the Stang Ray comes with an open back chassis for a more "airy" sound, but I like the vertical Z Best's size much better.
How would a Stang Ray pair with a Z Best? Is it possible to turn a Z Best into an open back cab?
Thanks in advance for your help!!

I have the open back 2x12 with Blues here, and love it. I never would have thought that the Z-Best would be suitable for the Stang Ray, but lo and behold, several guys here have tried it and loved it. It will likely respond a bit differently, but considering the raves I've seen here, I suspect you might like it.
As far as making the Z-Best open back, no, that would be a bad move. The Z-Best is a ported cab, which is why it sounds so great. If you open the back, it defeats the port, and suddenly you have a couple speakers bolted up to some plywood.
You should try to see if you can find a dealer near you to try it. I know I love my 'ray!
Oh yeah, welcome to the forum - have some Karma to get you started!

Have tried both side by side Love the Stangray for that extra dimension it has in the upper mids like no other amp
the Z-best seems to tame it, a "little" the open back blues seems to accentuate it
I like Vertical cabs too... but I'd have to go open back with the Stangray

Or go for the Stang Ray Stack like Steve Miller:

Great, thanks for your help guys. I'll probably run the stangray through an open back but have someone build the cab in a vertical style like the Z Best's. I asked Dr Z if he would build one but he says he doesn't do one-off's.
Anyone know of a good cab builder that does custom jobs?

I have an Avatar cab with two Blues in it. It is the same shape as the Z Best and you can use it vertically or horizontally (rubber feet on two sides).
