Which amp is considered to have the most clean headroom?
Stangray or Maz 38 Senior.

My guess would be the Stang Ray, but I don't have the Maz 38 to really compare. Maybe someone here has both...

Is there no definitive answer on this?

That might be a good question for Myles. The Z with the most clean headroom is the KT-45.

That might be a good question for Myles. The Z with the most clean headroom is the KT-45. I was mainly asking this question in relation to the Maz 38 and the stangray. I don't even see the KT-45 listed on the Dr Z site.

KT-45 is not in current production.

KT-45 is not in current production. Is there a current production model that replaced it. If not what would be comparable?

Well I'm no expert, and I don't have all of these, but this is what I believe about each relative to the question of clean headroom:
Carmen Ghia - not the most Galaxie - very powerful and capable of mucho clean (Fender tweed tone) MAZ 18 Jr - not the most MAZ 18 Jr NR - not the most MAZ 38 Sr - powerful and can be very clean MAZ 38 Sr NR - powerful and can be very clean Mazerati GT - must lower guitar volume to get to the clean Mini-Z Head - not much at all Prescription ES - powerful and can be very clean (Paisley) Prescription Jr. - can be very clean Route 66 - not the most Stang Ray - one of the cleanest (Paisley) (AC30 tone) Z-28 - not the most

Thanks benttop. That pretty much answered my original question.

A Z-28 with a 12AY7 as the phase inverter or a 5751 has a lot of clean headroom and more than an RxJR as an example or most of the duet EL84 amps. For a long time in Brad's rig the clean tones live were produced by his Z-28. On the MAZ amps if you turn the master all the way up they are capable of a lot of clean headroom.

I owned a Ray and Maz Sr w/Reverb at the same time for a while. I ran the Master wide open on the Sr and it just sounds amazing that way. Very open like the Ray in some regards but with a bit of a mid hump, it's just not as smooth as the Ray. It doesn't quite have as much low end as the Ray either. I tried tube swaps of all kinds and nothing will make a Sr sound like a Ray. But as far as clean headroom is concerned I think they're both in the same ballpark.

Yeah, that's why I had the disclaimer at the top. Let's see if we can make a revised list then: Carmen Ghia - not the most, but still capable of nice cleans Galaxie - very powerful and capable of mucho clean (Fender tweed tone) MAZ 18 Jr - not the most, but can be very clean with master wide open MAZ 18 Jr NR - not the most, but can be very clean with master wide open MAZ 38 Sr - powerful and can be very clean with master wide open MAZ 38 Sr NR - powerful and can be very clean with master wide open Mazerati GT - must lower guitar volume to get to the clean Mini-Z Head - not much at all Prescription ES - powerful and can be very clean (Paisley) Prescription Jr. - can be very clean with master wide open and volume down Route 66 - not the most, but can be clean with guitar volume down Stang Ray - one of the cleanest (Paisley) (AC30 tone) Z-28 - can be very clean, especially with some tube changes There, I think that sufficiently confuses the issue. It appears from this revised list that just about any Z amp can be clean under the right circumstances. Not sure if that's what the OP wanted to know, but there it is.

I'm not really interested in making the Maz 38 Stangray like as in about a week I will have both. I like the Maz for what it does. There are a few things I'd like to over come with it. I hope to overcome these issues with a Dr Z air break, an amp mod and possibly beam blockers.

I don't know about the Stang Ray but the Maz 38 does clean really well. My Maz also had a very nice crunch with the Volume all the way up and the Master any where from 10 o'clock to 3 o'clock. Like they say, "a very versatile amp".

I've had both, and the Stingray to my ear, regardless of how you run the MAZ 38, is easily the cleaner amp.
Short of using the HI input, and running it wide open (doesnt change much after 12 o'clock, just compresses more), the Ray just doesnt get very hairy.
Now there are an abundance of harmonics, and overtones going on, but they aint dirt.

I just traded a maz 38 for a stangray. I think the stangray has more clean headroom BUT I think the Maz is a louder amp. I play with a very loud band. With the Maz I could hang with everyone and cut through, volume-wise, but the amp was getting into overdrive. With the Stangray, the amp almost is not loud enough, but it didn't overdrive as much. However I prefer the tone of the Stangray better, so the drummer is going to have to play quieter! In loud settings I always ran the Maz with the master volume wide open.

Makes a huge difference in volume AND tone.
