first off just want to say hey to all and i hope to learn about these great amps!!
im in the market for a new amp. when i gig im usually playing more metal/modern rock (ac/dc, ozzy, crossfade, nickelback, etc.). so at first i was leaning towards a pre 1984 marshall jcm 800. however i have a good buddy who just bought a drz stang ray and im in love w/ the overall tone, quality, and looks of his amp. while i inderstand in the short time i played this amp it wont really cover my needs i was hoping some of you would guide me in the right direction of which dr z amp will?? any opinions or recomendations would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Welcome to Z-Talk! If you like the sound of the Stang Ray, but you want more gain, you should look into the Mazerati GT. It's not a clean amp like the Stang Ray is, but you can get beautiful cleans from it by lowering your guitar volume. But this amp has a ton of gain, so you have within one amp the ability to go from pristine sparkling clean to over the top high gain. Just by rotating your volume on your guitar. You should try one. There are probably some others I should mention... the Prescription Extra Strength (RXES) is another amp that goes from beautiful clean to high gain. Not quite as high as the Mazerati GT, but perhaps just what you're looking for. You should try one. If you're more into tweed tones, you should check on the Galaxie - a two channel amp with tweed tones on channel 1 and a fire breathing dragon on the other. You should try one. And of course no discussion of Dr. Z amps is complete without mentioning the Maz amps. The Maz Sr and Maz Jr are probably the most versatile amps in the lineup, but I'm not certain if they have enough gain for you - You should try one. There are also a number of out of production amps that could possibly do the deal for you - amps like the SRZ-65, and the 6545 both have JCM800 tones with Dr. Z construction and ideas built in. They are hard to find, but they do pop up from time to time. Hope that helps a bit - if you have a Dr. Z dealer near you, you should try all of these.

thanks for the info. yeah i had heard something about the srz. so they do not make them any more?? Not presently in production. By the way, I should have mentioned - if you like the sound of the Stang Ray, you can always use a dirt box for the high gain stuff. I use a BB Preamp or a MI Audio Crunch Box with my Stingray and it sounds amazing. If you've got all day, I've got a ton of clips of various Dr. Z amps over on my gear page at www.gear.strayca.com. You'll have to put up with a load of blues type playing, but there are a lot of audio clips of a lot of these amps there. Check it out.

I paid $1000.00 for my SRZ64LE. Did i get lucky or is that about right what i paid for it? I understand it's a limited run and all. Trying to get a ideal the value of used Dr.Z gear.I do watch Ebay to. I see myself expanding into more Dr.Z. I think i have become addicted! I apologize for my noob question. Learning as i go. Beautiful amps and tones. It's good to be home...

I think you got a fantastic deal on that SRZ - you never see them around for that low. If I offered mine it sure wouldn't be that low.

The last SRZ65 LE I saw sold for $1325. This one, plus the one that sold for $1000 makes the average price for a used LE around $1150? Hmmm...

no disrespect but if averages are based on 2, i would be really interested to see what the average price of the other 33 were. maybe i don't want to sell #24 after all.

Beautiful amps and tones. It's good to be home... Pretty great deal on the SRZ-65. The fellow that started this post that talked JCM 800 Marshall .... well, if he likes that sort of amp the SRZ-65 would be something that would be mandatory to check out. IT IS a Marshall 2204 done properly! Go listen to Michael Burks ... SRZ65 player these days. He also plays a MAZ 38, Delta 88s, and had played Matchless and even Dumble. www.michaelburks.comGo listen to Carl Verheyen - the SRZ65 is the heart of his live rig. www.carlverheyen.com
