I would love to have some suggestions on mike postioning for live performances with a Maz JR 2-10 combo. I am using an Audix I5 mike, and I run mono with just the one amp. I have been placing it just off center of one speaker with the mike about 8 inches from the speaker. This seems to sound pretty good but I'm sure others may more experience with better placements.
We play country and rock and most of the venues are medium size. I don't know if that makes any difference in the placement.
Your responses are greatly appreciated.

With a good mic going off center of the speakers is always a good idea. I usually go about 1/2 between the speaker center and the edge. Sometimes right up against the grill and other times a few inches away... but never dead center to avoid potential harshness.

I use a Sennheiser e906 Microphone that is designed to go right up next to the grill/speaker. It has a 3-position dip switch that sets the frequency response to flat or HF boost or HF retard. I usually have a fairly bright sound anyway so I put the switch in HF limit mode and put the mic to left of the center of the speaker cone on the speaker wall between the center and foam surround.
Interestingly enough there was a manual that came with the mic that suggested some placements and believe it or not the mic in the same basic position (between the coil and surround) sounds DIFFERENT if you place the mic across the center of the speaker OR across the top or bottom (keep in mind the the mic is still between the coil and surround but simply moved around to the middle, top or bottom). I get more bass when the mic is on top or bottom and more highs when the mic is somewhere in the middle (left or right of the coil).
Suffice to say that mic placement is a matter of physics, mic and amp and the room. So optimum placement will vary from room to room sometimes. But generally I tend to like my mic just to the left of the coil. I vary the distance from the coil to make up for having too much treble or bass in my sound. Because of the mic design though I never get more than 1 inch from the front of the cabinet.

I run mine like bluzman, off center right against the grill cloth.
