Replacing tubes, keeping the amp away from radio sources, anything else?

The more you have between you and the amp is an issue as well. Are you saying the idle noise is unbearable? How loud are you playing? What amp?

The idle noise while nothing is plugged in is not too loud but still noticably annoying.
I have a maz jr. 212 No Reverb. The speakers are TT alnicos wired in series.
Not sure if its time to replace a certain tube. Which one would be closely related to the idle noise?

Hard to say really. What is annoying to one guy, isn't to another. I would get out all the pre amp tubes , start with the 12AX7's.
How long have you had this amp? Is this something recent? Has something changed?

If it is more of a hiss .... V1 would be the first thing I would check.
If it is more humm ... output tubes are no longer matched.

I'll admit, I'm no tube expert, but I just popped an old Sylvania 5VR rectifier into my Maz Jr. in place of the Sovtek 5AR4 and the "hiss" that was being added by turning up the Cut knob was greatly reduced. The tone of the amp got more mellow overall. Sort of spongey now and more Fender-ish to my ears. I like it.
Anyway, the rectifier seemed to lower the noise floor of the amp.
Myles, that's good info to know about "hiss" vs "humm" in an amp. I never knew that. I appreciate all of your advice on these boards. Eddie
p.s. mchoi, stop back in and let us all know what works.
