When i roll the volume down on my 2001 R9 it drops off fast and is dark. On 10 it's full bodied, turn it down to 6 or 7 and it's way to quiet and dark and almost disappears. It has 500k linear pots in all positions(i contacted Gibson). My amps are very touch sensitive so a wider range of volume control is a must. It has the 57 Classic Pups, and everything is stock. I also own a 2001 Les Paul Classic , when you turn the volume down on it , it drops off gradually and at 5 on the dial still has clarity. I contacted Gibson about this guitar and was told it has 300K linear for the volume controls and 500K audio taper for the volumes. The Classic performs more the way you would expect. So how can i make the Historic perform the same way and still try to keep it original. Thanks in advance for your time. Paul

There is a mod you can do with adding a cap and a resistor to each volume pot. It does work. There is also another mod you can do by some minor rewiring and grounding as was discussed in the past two weeks somewhere here and it was in ToneQuest Reports recently. I have the info for each mod somewhere over here, so PM me your email address and I can email the info to you. Both mods are easy to do.

If it was my guitar I would replace the linear taper volume pots with the same value audio taper pots. If you went with more resistance say 500k you would here more treble. The 300k are fine if you prefer the darker sound. Doug

Standard for humbucker guitars - 500K audio taper pots all around.
If the pickups are humbuckers, add a .001 mfd cap to the volume pots. Would only add the resistor to the mix (cap+resistor) if you're using single coils. Cap allows more treble to pass as you're lowering the volume - keeps the edge on the tone consistent w/wide open at lower guitar volumes.
-------------- Audio taper is gradual - even across the entire range of the control. Linear taper is more compressed - all at once w/limited control.
The higher the k rating, the brighter the treble will be. (or, conversely, the lower the k, the warmer the guitar will sound). 250k - standard for Single-coils 500k - standard for Humbuckers (and an 'option' if you like a REALLY bright single-coil sound) 1000k (1 meg) - an option if you like a REALLY bright humbucker sound.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm working on getting the Historic to be a little more versatile. Paul
