I'm using a Maz 38 Senior head with Z best cab in vertical position this weekend. I have a Sennheiser e609 mic. I'm just wondering what an ideal placement for it would be. Directly against the grille, a foot in front, etc. Any tips would be appreciated.

I use the same microphone a lot. What I have found that I like is put the mic back about 6" from the grille and about halfway between the speaker edge and the center of the cone. I also like to mic the G12H speaker in the Z-best more than the V30.
Just my opinion. Hope that helps some.

I guess I could open up the cabinet to find out which is which but which one is the G12H when the cabinet sits up vertical?

Yeah that would be the best way to confirm. In the past it seems the V30 was usually on top and G12H on the bottom when it was vertical but not sure that is a constant. Try both and see which you like best. I like the darker G12H over the V30. However, that is just my taste.

If for live use, try two mics, one on each speaker. A 609, 57 or 421 should work great. If this is for studio recording, try a large diaphragm condenser 2-3 ft from the cab to pick up the blended sound of both speakers.

If you put a flashlight directly against the grill cloth you'll be able to spot the G12H by the gold outer rim of the speaker. Is this a show or a recording session?
