I'm reading some different opinions on the different tube choices and how they can affect tone in a positive manner. I read that changing the rectifier tube to a phillips/mullard will make a dramatic affect. Yet when I email the tubestore they said that changing tubes in the audio path would make more of a difference. As well as the Mullard rectifier tubes are too rare to even get. So where is everyone getting them. So is there a recommendation on what tubes to replace with what brand to improve the Z amp tone?

Mike at KCA NOS Tubes has Mullards (American labeled) but they are pricey. You might try his NOS JAN Philips/Sylvania 5AR4 (mislabeled 5V4GA). There's a lot on eBay but it's hard to know who to trust in regard to quality and testing. Here's a good one: www.tubemonger.com/Mullard_GZ34_1968_MINT_NOS_NIB_Valvo_Label_p/750.htm. You just gotta do some sleuthing with Google.

Rectifiers do not effect tone but they do effect the feel of the amp and NOS rectifiers are much more reliable and you generally see more wattage as they exceed spec while new rectifiers fall short of spec in most cases. NOS rectifiers can last decades and new ones which fail in a matter of hours is not at all uncommon.
A NOS rectifier will make the amp just feel better, play more articulately and sound better. Whether that is a tonal change has been debated for years but most folks that go the NOS route never go back.
