I am experiencing a problem with my Stang Ray. I emailed the Doc, but also wanted to post here to see what you guys think it could be.
The amp is only 1 month old, and I purchased it new. Today when I was in the studio, the amp started making a crackling noise. It sounds like a record player’s needle on a record. I changed speaker cables, and it continued. It is also still present regardless of whether anything is plugged into one of the inputs. I assume it is probably a tube, but I am no amp tech. The tubes are the stock tubes and I have not altered the amp in anyway.
What do you guys think? Thanks
Evan

Tighten the four 1/4 X 20 bolts that hold the chassis in place. Make sure they are good and tight .
Then if crackleing persists re-seat each tube one at a time, and feel for a good contact in the socket.

Thanks Doc!
I will try that and report back.

Just ran back to the studio, and tried what you suggested. I tightened all the screws and reseated all the tubes. The crackling still continues. What should the next step be? Thanks for your help.

Hey Evan, does it go away when you turn the volume down? Does the tone control affect it? How about the cut control?

Steve,
Yeah it goes away when the volume is all the way down. And the cut and tone knobs do have an effect, but in the way that the controls are supposed to (if that makes sense). The cut knob makes the crackle brighter, and the tone knob makes the crackle have more low end.
It really does sound like a record player.

My guess would be the EF86, but it could be any of them. Sometimes tubes fail prematurely.

After the Doc responded and I went out to check the bolts and reseat the tubes, I did change out the PI with another 12AX7, and it wasn't the culpruit, but I don't have another EF86. I'll probably give Nashville Amp Repair a call tomorrow after I hear back from the Doc, and see what they've got. I'll definitely get a couple! Thanks for your responses Steve!
Evan
And if it is 86, should I put that tube condom thing on the new tube, and how do I get it off the old one?
