So I don't know what it is, but there is somethinga bout Dr.Z's amps that just seem to be calling me. I want something that is great for blues with a good clean sound. I play strats and LPs. I keep looking at the Maz 18 because I like the EQ options, but I notice that most of the good Dr's amps only have 3 dials instead of the 7 on the Maz. Am I missing out on any tonal options by going with something like the Ghia over the Maz? Now, I play mostly at home and I jam with friends, maybe a small gig, so I really want something that gets great tones without having to crank the volume (ie something with a master). I also want a 1x12 combo. Opinions?

Ghia sounds like the one ,but for versatility,Maz Jr is a great choice. ;D

I prefer the amps with less knobs but as always, your mileage may vary! I started out with a Maz38SR(7 knobs)...now I have a Mini(1 knob), Ghia(2 knobs) and Z28(3 knobs) and I couldnt be happier.

if you use humbuckers and single coils, and like a loud tone that is not too clean, i would get a ghia 2/10 combo or head and cab. headroom is at lower volumes on these, but you can get a bit more by trying different preamp tubes.. for blues these really cant be beat, for small gigs and such. for overall small gig blues tone they cannot be equaled. there is more variation of tone than you might think, you can turn the tone control all theway to the left to bring out the treble of a neck pickup and back to the right to get more meat on a treble pickup. check out buddy whittingtons tone in the sounds section.. he plays clubs with a ghia,, this should give you some insight.

My first Z amp was a Maz Jr, I picked it because I couldn't imagine playing an amp without reverb. After about 2 years playing the Maz Jr, I was curious enough about other Z amps that I bought a Rt 66 without ever having played one, I'd only heard some sound samples. After getting the 66, my poor Maz Jr just sat and I eventually sold it. IMO, the 66 has a warmer, rounder, fatter sound than the Maz, and I didn't miss reverb with the 66. I expect I'll have a Ghia in a few days as it's on order, so I'll soon be down to just 2 knobs. So what am I suggesting? I can't tell you what's right for you, but I'd seriously consider a Ghia head and then buy a cabinet, that way you can always swap speakers to get the sound you want (provided you like what the Ghia gives up). Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I don't want an amp with reverb, so no problems there. I guess my only concern with the amps without master volumes like the ghia or 66 or whatever, is that they will really be too loud for home use. Thoughts?

You should go with the Maz 18 reverb. Well you said you don't want it but at home a reverb is nice to have and you will really like Z's master volume. If you want more drive all you need is some kind of pedal to push the fron end. The extra tone controls also help you adjust to your home environment. Lots of people gig Ghias so if it can keep up with drums it would be really loud for the house. The Maz 18 can sound loud but the master volume lets you bring it down to where you can play along with the stereo and still get a great sound.

I play my Ghia at home at low volume and it sounds fine. Great clean sound at lower volumes. All you need is an OD pedal in front. Recommend a Ghia head with a 1 x 12 Celestion Blue to get started and go from there. I use a Blue and a G12H30, and the combination sounds wonderful. Good luck.
