Myles, I have a MAZ38 and would like to buy some tubes that will give me the best possible tone from my amp. I have a friend giving me a NOS Sylvania BIG Bottle GZ34 rectifier tube. My next step is the preamp tubes. I have been told that I only need to replace V1 but would like a profesional opinion. Someone said the Brimar would be my best bet for V1. I play strats and play the blues so I do not want to give up the gain that is currently in the amp, if anything I would like slightly more gain from my Maz38, but improving on the tone of the amp is most important. Do I need to replace all the preamp tubes or do you agree with only replacing V1. Any help you could offer me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Kevin Salter

Thanks Kevin Salter Kevin, In the future put this stuff in my thread or I tend to miss it. In the MAZ .... v1 and v2. The others need to attention other than the phase inverter to fine tune things later. As far as which tubes .... well, that is like me telling you what to eat for dinner! Personal preference big time. All my own amps and those of my GAB clients have tube kits ... multiple preamp tubes to be swapped in the front end depending on the need of the evening, the studio, the mic, the venue etc. In the case of some folks like Brad Paisley there is also a dozen or more phase inverter tubes to swap in and out to make the amp tighter or looser, more or less headroom, etc. Bard's tech, Chad Weaver has this down to a fine art and science. For an all around great amp I love a Brimar for V1 and ... and RFT and a Raytheon 12AX7. They are all different and have their own cool vibe. With these three tubes you can also mix them up in V1 and V2 and do even more.
