Hi everybody. I have a Maz Sr and Jr that I can safely change Phase inverter tubes from 12ax7's to 12at7's without fear of damageing the amplifier. It is a nice feature but what I'm wondering is if it is safe to do this with other amps as well. I have a deluxe reverb reissue that I also like very much for recording purposes. I accidentally put a 12ax7 in the PI spot and I really like the sound, especially at low volumes. Can anybody tell me if over time doing this will damage the amp as it is rated for a 12at7 in the PI slot. I'd be curious to try it on my concert II also. Buster

Using a 12AX7 in the PI of Fender amps designed for 12AT7s is common practice and safe to do. If you liked the effect, try also removing V1 (if using the reverb channel) which adds earlier breakup. You might like this instead of or combined with the 12aX7 in the PI socket (V6).

Thank you very much for the info mikekca. I would give you some karma but I don't know how of if I can do that just yet. Will definately try that but will any of this mess up the bias in my amp and perhaps wear out my 6v6's faster? Buster

O.K. so I pulled the first tube in my deluxe reverb reissue and played through the reverb channel. I found that it has kind of the same effect as putting a 12ax7 the P.I. slot. It makes the amp somewhat louder too. I then tried it with both no tube in v1 along with a 12ax7 for a P.I. and it was louder still. It makes the amp sound more aggresive. I eventually opted for the 12ax7 in the PI and left v1 with a tube in it. That way I can use either channel without monkeying around too much. I went to the kcnos tube website and saw that some folks might put a lower output tube in v1 for taming les pauls a little. That would add yet more versatility to the amp I suppose but I have yet to try that. I messed around with a number of different brands of tubes also but that is another story. Just a reminder that I haven't tried this stuff live as I mostly use this amp to record with so the level of satisfaction could possibly different for higher volumes or in live settings. Curious to know if my output tubes will wear faster though. Oh yeah, I found out that the Karma thing is no longer in effect so thanks again. Buster
