Is it ok to use an attenuator as a dummy speaker load for recording? By that, I mean, can you run the amp to the attenuator, to the recorder without running a speaker? I have read, and have been told by several so-called "amp guru's", that the attenuator acts as a dummy load on the amp. None of whom have personal experience with "Z" amps...I don't want to burn up an output tranny based on "what I've heard"...Any advice here would be greatly appreciated... BTW..The attenuator I'm gonna use is an ancient Tom Sholz "Power Soak". Not an "Airbrake" or "Mini Mass" by any stretch. But, since I have a couple lying around from the 70's, I figured....WTH... thx... T rock..

Be careful... not all attenuators operate the same way. Someone who knows the Power Soak IN PARTICULAR needs to chime in here...

No knowledge of the Sholz unit here. I have done what you propose many times with my THD Hot Plates, as they are specifically designed to do this (they have a position on the rotary switch that shuts off the speaker entirely). On the other hand, I'm aware that you can NOT do it with the Airbrake. That difference should be enough to make you tread very carefully. It may be hard to find anyone with specific knowledge of the Sholz unit, since it's from such a long time ago. One thing you absolutely CAN do is get yourself a big ole power resistor, wire a plug on it, and use it as a dummy speaker. They are not really all that expensive - you can get a 16 ohm 50 watt resistor through Weber for just under two bucks. Wire two in parallel for 8 ohms @ 100 watts. Nice. taweber.powweb.com/store/resord.htmGood luck!

Thx Steve...That is good info indeed.....If you can't do it w/an Airbrake, prolly not wise to attempt w/what I have either...I'll look into those resistors....
Nobody on the planet likes to crank up and wail more than I do..(except maybe Ted Nugent), but I am prone to midnight to daylight recording sessions.. My neighbors think I'm insane...well.......I have'nt been clinically diagnosed yet....We'll leave it at that.

I burned up a Scholtz Power Soak years ago. (100 watt Marshalls will do that!)
From what I remember, no, you cannot run it without a speaker. But it's been years since I've seen it.

Weber said his can be used as a dummy load. Just crank it to full attenuation. I can hear a little sound out of my speaker even when it is fully attenuated, but Ted said it is one billionth of a watt (well, something like that) and it should be fine to unplug the speaker at that point.
