I have a sort of off topic question. I am getting an amp signed by a well-known player. My question is: what can I do to ensure the signature remains on the tolex (short of keeping the cover on all the time). Any recommendations on a fixture of some sort?

I use to use this stuff called Clear Matte but its a ceramic sealer. I'd spray them on the autographes so they wouldn't smudge or fade. I don't know what it would do to the tolex though. If you don't get much help here your next best bet would be to ask at the local craft store.

Permanant markers hold up pretty well. I had a car dashboard penned by a now dead race legend, Peter Brock. The nico pen served well for years. If you are doing it on a darker amp however, the white markers dont hold on so well. If you can live with a signature on your tolex, you may have to live with a piece of clear contact over it. Or 2 inch sellotape. You can spray a sealer over it(im a spraypainter by trade) but over time it will deteriorate. Do u intend to just keep it as a piece, or will it be gigged? If the latter you will have to cover it I think with contact or a clear vinyl spray. If its just gonna stay home, it'll probably hold up by itself. I know when my kids were little and used a permanant marker on the walls, it wasnt gonna budge..

For those of you that replied to my query - I finally ended up using a spray called "Workable Fixatif" from Krylon. While it made the tolex a little shinier than the original finish, it did not affect the signature. I'll let you know longer term if I have any issues.
Thanks for your responses!

I was lucky enough to get one of the first EVH 5150 III that was used in the photo shoot with Eddie. He signed both the head and the cabinet.

If you are serious about preserving it, buy a new cabinet. It is only a little plywood and tolex.

HOLY CRAP THATS PRETTY PIMP DUDE!!!
I read the big Guitar World article with EVH and his new amps sounds amazing. Though I wasted my money seeing Van Hager a few years ago I wish I was able to see DLR and EVH and that new amp...
ROCK THAT!!

I'm not gigging with it - it stays in my studio (the reason I ended up with it is because the guy that originally bought it didn't want to take it on the road and yet he loved the sound!) I paid him exactly what he had into it which was less than retail since he's an "artist" . I lucked out on that one! BTW - I did see VH in concert this year - sound system was terrible but they put on a good show.
